Hadn't shaved for a week, hair was a bit wild, and a bit grubby.

Automatically gave me the senior discount.

Could have been worse, they could have directed you to a homeless shelter :-).

300 baud. Also 1200/75. I had one of the first modems capable of this. Most others at the time were acoustic.

Oh gawd, this is going to get into a dicksize war fast... (cough)1200/75(cough). And that's before you get into things like ASR33's.

Edited to add: Anyone here want to remember how they had to bang rocks together to get ones and zeroes? Or were so poor they could only afford the zeroes? :-).

Forgot about those days when you were specially invited to participate. I remember giving one of my free invites to a dear man in Egypt trying to do business and he still uses it. Internet was hardly a thing in developing countries then and he felt very honoured.

I was early enough in the game when Xtra started around 1996 that I was able to get my three initials as my email address - xxx@xtra.co.nz. Thought nothing of it at the time. This is one reason why I am reluctant to move from Xtra.

On the plus side you can get your own domain so you have firstname@lastname.nz instead nowadays...

Sadly, not if your lastname is the same as a giant worldwide insurance broker 😞

It's not an ego competition. At least not for me. I find it interesting to hear about the early gadget experiences of others and enjoy sharing in the same spirit. I still fondly remember my first modem, which I actually wrote some software for. That was in 1984, if I recall correctly. At that time my personal computer was a CP/M Kaypro. Isn't this thread supposed to be about things that make one feel old? That one certainly does!

Pretty sure I used an audio coupled handset modem 300 baud right at the start

Oh, and at school final year we had punch cards. Had to punch each line of code onto a card (from memory it was FORTRAN) wrap a rubber band around it and they all went up to the University of Auckland computer center who ran them for us and the cards and resulting printout were sent back once they got spare time to run them.
