How does that crap get through in a country as safety-obsessed as this one?

the risks of paying to NZ bank accounts beginning with the prefix "04-" as they're likely to be Wise accounts attached to ANZ "04" bank accounts.

Wise also uses BNZ as well -- I have used a 02-1291-xxxxxxx-xx account in the past to pay into my Wise account. They seem to chop and change who they partner with every so many years. For their cards they previously Mastercard and now Visa. Same with my US/UK/etc bank details -- they changed the banks they use so had to change my bank details. Probably to chase cheaper costs.

Just pointing out as just a 04- prefix is not a reliable red flag hence it might not be appropriate for Trade Me to provide that type of advice you suggest. ANZ may also start using the 04- prefix for other fintech providers as well.

I wonder who historically managed the 04 prefix. I know ANZ is responsible now for 01, 04, 06 and 11 prefixes. 01 was original ANZ, 06 is ex NBNZ and 11 is ex Postbank so maybe 04 is ex Countrywide and may have non-Wise accounts?

This thread makes me realise what an utter ratbag organisation Trademe has become. Their approach to all this is reprehensible. Their founders (Sam Morgan et al) would be mortified.

Unsure, but my children received multiple presents this year which were obviously purchased from Temu (or similar) which do not meet NZ's safety regulations with regards to the security and accessibility of coin/button type batteries. If they were sold in shops they would be subject to a recall. But people think it's fine to buy them direct from China and then give them to kids.

As a safety-conscious parent I am aware of the issue and take steps to address it whenever I see someone give my kids a new toy. But it frustrates me that it's yet another thing that falls on parents which other people don't think about.

Anyway, way off topic, but it grinds my gears.

I've been told by a lawyer client that Disputes are very lazy, hence why they asked us to do the donkey work. I believe the "Trust and Safety" division of Trademe will be dealing with this as they're the ones who made the 50% offer suggesting they're acknowledging their failure to keep on top of pawned accounts. Hopefully a call can be transferred on the day. Absolutely crazy that they could get away with this simply by refusing to provide the contact number for the correct person.

Many thanks everyone for your help so far. Hopefully our ducks will be in a row by then.

They are not lazy, they are not empowered and are not well funded.

Heh, have you met him? I doubt he would be mortified at all.

They are doing whatever they can to keep their costs to a minimum and reduce their legal liability, the same way any organisation would.

It may be reprehinsible, but it's not personal.

I don’t accept that at all. What about being a good corporate citizen?

I found these words on their trading website. They’re weasel-words and have been proven above to be BS. If I could be bothered I bet I would find a whole lot more on their corporate website.

“We’re straight up, transparent and we do the right thing.”

”We’re proud to be a Kiwi business, and love to find ways our people, and our platform, can help.”

“Customers are part of our community and we’re part of theirs. We understand how they tick and give them things that are valuable, empowering and easy to use.”

“At Trade Me, we're by Kiwi, for Kiwi. We recognise that we have a responsibility to help make Aotearoa a better place for all.”

What crap.

Does Confirmation of Payee work for Wise accounts as well as regular ones?

Where's the money in that?

I know a large organisation in the US whose "good corporate citizen" policy at the time was "never appear above the fold in the NY Times".  That wasn't what their official policy statement said, but it was what their actual policy was.

How about “acting in good faith” then? They’re certainly not doing that.

What crap.

Trade Me's current owner is Apax Partners LLP a British private equity firm, headquartered in London, England. Insulated by distance.

It will happen when the financial impact of not doing so, is such, it's cheaper to do it than not. Until then....

02-1291-xxxxxxx-xx - Kiwibank reports "[warning icon] Payee’s bank or account type doesn’t support checking".

04-2021-xxxxxxx-xx - Kiwibank reports "[warning icon] Payee’s bank or account type doesn’t support checking".

Not good enough IMHO as ANZ/BNZ should be able to capture the name from Wise for the purpose of the Confirmation of Payee service.

But at least that lets you distinguish between a genuine account and a Wise alias, so you can refuse to pay into a Wise alias.
