Just thought I'd be clever clogs, and go register (or correctly licence), my cars/scooters for the maximum 15 months allowable today, even though its not due for 3 months from now, so that I avoid the increase in registration costs on 1 July 2009...

However the small print must not be "taking effect 1 July 2009", it must be "taking effect immediately once price increases were announced, applicable to all vehicle licences due ON 1 July 2009 or after".

As I found out the hard way, if your vehicle licence is due 1/7/09 or after, then if you get rego now you pay the new increased price. So in my case my bill was $560 odd, bearing in mind thats 2 cars and 1 moped, all with rego running out july/august 09 so all were 12 months or just under to pay.

So moral is, if your thinking of registering your car early to avoid the increases, fact is if it is due 1/7/09 or after you will pay full price anyway, so there is no point to doing it yet.

It's been this way for a long time. Road user tax for diesel is the same to stop people buying huge quantities in advance to avoid the increase.
