So I saw a banner ad for Tosh Computers.

I'd heard of them before, heard that they were reputable, and were all above board.

So I didn't think that clicking on their ad would do any harm.

Suddenly Firefox flashes up a Google advisory that:

"This web site at toshbuy.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences."

I try to go to toshcomputers.co.nz, but the same message comes up.

I google Toshcomputers, and sure enough, beside the Google link for their site, the same warning comes up.

Then Avast rings the sirens and warns me of a possible worm infection from Toshbuy.com.

What's going on??

Both Firefox and IE check if a site you're about to visit is on a security risk greylist before letting you go there.

I would guess Tosh are probably using some form of shared website hosting where one server or cluster of servers is hosting many websites (this is very common).

One of the sites on the ip address has been compromised or detected as serving malware and thus all sites served from that ip address have been greylisted (collateral damage).

Happened to Maxnet recently, quite a common occurrence with these not so smart greylisting services.

Yip, that is exactly what happened. The Canadian host was attacked through other domains and spread a virus. Our site is as pristine and perfect as it ever was, and Google has reported it will take weeks before the 'all clear' is circulated through their system. Thanks for reporting the issue. Cheers, Jens

Oh well, I guess it is the price to pay when you are transacting business on the web.. Our host has nearly200,000 domains under management and it is probably fair odds that one or more of their domains become involved in spamming etc. We remain open for business, and our sales are up sharply in thus economic downturn, so we are happy.

Was worried when I saw that warning. Oddly enough though; It only happened in Firefox, not Internet Explorer..
