savag3: I wonder if the third party email marketing system they have used (mailprimer.com) has been compromised. That might explain why emails used at other companies have been spammed as well.

many of these email marketing companies have their SMTP servers based in the US and in other countries.  That means that thousands of emails travel, unencrypted, backwards and forwards over multiple hops through more than one ISP/transit company.  Someone with the ability to sniff traffic at any of these points could easily create an email list that contained all the email addresses that belonged to a companys' database.  All it takes is an attack on an unpatched router, a dodgy employee at one of the companies controlling one of the networks, a dns spoofing attack, or one of a number of other means.  It doesnt necessarily mean a specific companies database has been compromised.

kingjj: Does anyone know when Hell's launched their latest iteration of their website? Ordering today noticed a brand new website which required us to re-join and re-enter our details. Could this be linked to the re-emergence of this email issue?

OT //

Completely off topic now but remotely relevant I was in a Hell Pizza store this evening waiting for my order when a woman slipped over on the wet floor and hurt her back. The staff there had no idea what to do. One wondered over and asked her if she was alright, when all he got back was tears he wandered back to the counter and got a wet floor sign. Another staff member eventually asked her and her boyfriend if she would like an ambulance, it was up to a customer to get a blanket from her car to cover the woman and keep her calm... complete fail.

// OT

That is really bad. OSH requires signage if the floor is wet in a commercial operation. Wonder if it will be an ACC thing.

Well we know its not deliberate since in NZ when a place is that incompetent you are still limited by grotty ACC legislation about what you can get from the place. US has it right in some respects.

Dear Valued Hell Customer,

We have been approached by a party claiming to be in possession of
customer details from the previous Hell website which is no longer in
operation.  The samples that we received included details of four customers
from 2006, including phone numbers and email addresses and order
information. We can confirm that credit card data was not at risk as this
is held independently on a secure banking website.

Whilst we are still investigating the matter, we can confirm that the
information was obtained without our knowledge and we have approached the
New Zealand Police with a view to lodging a formal complaint.  Hell
recognises the importance of protecting customer information and additional
security measures were implemented earlier this year when our new website
was rolled out (again, we reiterate that this is not an issue affecting the
new website). As a further security measure your may wish to consider
changing your passwords on other sites if they were the same as the old
Hell Pizza website.

We apologise for the incident and any inconvenience that this may have
caused.

Sincerely,

Stu McMullin – Director Hell Pizza

That's the latest email I have received from them, never got any spam though, but in saying that my spam filter is quite strong when it comes to spam.

I just looked and recived 3 emails mentioning " pdf-reader" back in 2nd/3rd aug 09. Was to my old ihug address which I had given hell.

Since the old site was made by spikefin interactive, anyone had a look at any of their othersites? I would be worried if I had a site made by them right now ;)

I'm going to be really peeved if, after someone having my details for 12 months, and Hell only now telling me about it, that I find any of my accounts around the place compromised! I cannot believe people are defending them over it on their Facebook page - just because the pizzas are good! I hope those ones all have accounts hacked due to the breach and lets see their response then.

Yeah, I know. I don't use the same password on every site, I have a handful of passwords that I use across all the sites I have accounts on.

MackinNZ: All this AND the quality of their Pizza's and service have gone majorly downhill in the last year or so. Not good for Hell Pizza Co.

Their pizza is now terrible. Their product used to be good - you're better off buying Pizza Hut now because not only are their pizzas better they're a lot cheaper.

I've got to disagree with you on that. I've yet to have a pizzahut pizza that hasn't left me feeling terrible the next day. Next to Spags Pizza, Hells is by far the best pizza in Chch. Personal opinion at the end of the day I suppose.

You've obviously got a good Hell's down there still! I'm by no means saying Pizza Hut make the best pizzas but the last few Hell Pizza's I've eaten from various Wellington stores have been terrible and certainly not worth the money they're wanting for them.

Pizza Hut are vastly superior to what they were a few years ago and the financial results show this. Domino's have lost significant market share to Pizza Hut which is shown by their cycle of deep discounting that's occuring at present with pizzas back down under $7 again.

The last pizza I ordered from Pizza Hut was sprayed with cheese flavoring from an aerosol can after it came out of the oven. This was a few years ago and I haven't been back since due to that. Do they still do this?

The last time I ordered Hell Pizza was after a couple of years without having any of them... We ordered two pizzas to collect, and when I got home they were both wrong. Very bad service on what basically is their only product.

I complained and the manager offered one pizza on my next order. It ain't gonna happen...

Had one from the northcote store a while back since the one close to me closed and became a dominos.

Anyway, was gross. Very stingy meat portions on the chicken cranberry and whatever else one (I cant remember the stupid names they give things) and a massive gap at the edge.

Their ad's are just pissing me off with the old target guy saying they have less stuff in them (perhaps that's why they taste so blah) and they cost way more than dominos which IMO is better.

I don't use the same password for things because its just stupid. but I know a lot of people who do. To delay the announcement of this is real bad form IMO.

When we were still in Lower Hutt we frequently brought Hell. The was over a period of several years up until late 2006. I found that during 2006 the quality was taking a dive - far less toppings on the pizza's, orders taking longer to be prepared (and often not ready when you turn up to pick them up), and orders frequently (more than 50% of the time) stuffed up. And whenever it was stuffed up we were never offered anything approaching what was stuffed up in the order. It was a shame as they had been so good!

Of course we're now somewhere without Hell Pizza, so I can't comment on what they're like now. And I would like to have one again... some day.

The local licensing trust did open a hell wannabe restaurant locally, but they completely stuff it up from day 1, so it never took off. Scary thing was there were even similarly named pizzas.

I probably miss Burger Fuel more, as when we got utterly sick of Hell's that is where we started to go. Oh I wish someone would open a Burger Fuel in Ashburton!!!
