billgates: My personal opinion is that any religious place/institution is a cult.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion.  Although I now am not religious, I was brought up as an Anglican.  Now, if you want an open minded, tolerant church, then that's it.  Gay ministers?  Check.  Women ministers?  Check.  Using contraception?  Check.  If you don't believe me, Google "victims of catholicism" "victims of mormonism" and "victims of anglicanism".  Zero matches for the last search, but tens of thousands for the others.

As for the definition of a cult, my general definition would be any group that once you are in it, they will attempt to prevent you from leaving, using psychological methods.

Mention the "C" word to a Scientologist, sit back and enjoy the hilarity.

I already have a beef with religion... guys like Tamaki aren't helping!

Seems quite appropriate the TV show "The Cult" is running right now!

I really resent Tamaki's stance that it's the lack of Jesus that is the root of society's problems right now... as if one needs a concept of God and the threat being punished in the afterlife to do "good".

Thats EXACTLY what annoys me as well. The religious types who are only good people because if they don't follow the rules of the commandments etc, they will go to hell, rather than doing things from a moral standpoint.

The thing is that this situation is exactly the type that Jesus came to condemn; I can very much visualise Him entering the Temple that it appears Destiny church has become and overturning the tables and driving them out.  This appalling situation (and I read with horror this morning that people were charged for the privalage of attending and participating) has nothing to do with Christianity / Jesus and everything to do with Religion .... the two dont co-relate.

ps without wanting to get into an argument I wonder about your last comment about a 'moral standpoint' ... just who decides what is moral and what is not if you dont have an absolute?

My temple should be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of theives! Get out! Get out!

Another point of view is that Jesus himself may have been treated with the same skepticism when he started his teaching.  Only time will tell what history has to say about Bishop Tamaki...

Niiiiiiiiiice.

I actually listened to Superstar this morning!

Funny that someone as anti-religious as myself would be into it, but hey, a good story is a good story!

For me (and I know the question wasn't aimed at me, I just feel like chiming in), morality is a natural outgrowth of society, something that comes from all of us, not just one moral leader.

I thought this Destiny Church was okay, Brian was okay just a preacher trying to direct followers to the truth. Besides him being Maori I saw this as a good thing maybe he will turn many bros into god loving believers you know get those homies of the streets who walk around with their pants half way down yelling im gonna smash you up bit*h Myself half Maori I would sometimes watch him on tv when they screen his shows in the mornings and thought well hes for a good cause as he was preaching the word truthfully no leaning and changing the teachings just to please the masses. A god preacher is a straight up preacher and Brian was pretty much straight to the point.

Then i read this. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10605956

How his followers the 700 sons should honor him and his wife, protect him, what does that mean? So if someone is against him would they the sons attack this man if say he got up and verbally abused Brian during one of his services. Scary thought i can see something like this happening one day. Kinda like how Hitler had his SS guards to protect him and worship him even lay down their lives for hitler. Brian Tamaki and the 700 sons are no different.

Jesus said you must worship noone but the Father in Heaven. Priest, church leaders are not to be treat as such! Brian Tamaki is a false preacher, false prophet. Hes a liar straight up and should been treated as such. Beware of wolves in sheeps clothing.

I was watching John Campbel on TV3 and there was footage from a guy who took an undercover camera into this thing.
