Saw this in the Times today.

Coming to a NZ town near you in 2050, perhaps?! Wink

Free WiFi in the era of RIAA and MPAA takedown notices is a very risky business.

A few days ago a town in the USA lost it's free WiFi due to a takedown notice from Sony as somebody had downloaded some copyrighted material.

Can you serve such notices in the UK?

Of course .  The RIAA and MPAA are the world copyright police and can bomb any town that has wifi  in the war against terror..

Ha!

It certainly won't be long, that's for sure.

I have a long list of key words I always include in phone conversations with my brother in the USA just to see if the CIA or NSA are really listening! So far he reports no Men In Black visiting.

I assume you are refering to this:
http://tech.slashdot.org/story/09/11/12/2025201/MPAA-Shuts-Down-Towns-Municipal-WiFi-Over-1-Download?art_pos=1

The 'entire town' wifi network was acutally just one access point outside the court house. As far as I am aware, there wasn't a takedown notice, just a notification to the people who run the access point that there was illegal activity. They probably decided to shut it down themselves.

I get free WiFi from my neighbour, isn't this the same thing?
