As I am sure everyone on here knows the LTNZ mouthpiece was on about distractions at the start of the month related to the handheld mobile restriction and other storys about other distractions etc.

Anyway, one particually annoying thing I find when driving - which I have no control over (other then to not use it) is the constant abuse of the RDS station name that most FM stations are now doing with scrolling song names and competition details etc.

Its not radio text, since thats left off car radios for a good reason, its the 8 character station name that is not supposed to change. Even the RDS specs say its to be changed infrequently as it is a distraction. And here we have mediaworks and the other lot pushing crap out over it non stop.

So I emailed the MED as they give licenses out to stations and surely this is against the license. Turns out that RDS is not part of the license and they dont care. Whereas overseas there are standards about the clock needing to be right, TA not being abused as all stations seem to do and there not to be anything scrolling on it.

But they dont care.

So I emailed LTNZ (this was at the start of the month) since they seem to care about distractions - and just got a reply back today that they have "passed it on"

Now I get really annoyed with the preset list on the home stereo being renamed to crap names, but in the car it means you have to mess around to see the station etc.

How do others feel about this mess that they are sending out?

I like it.

P.S. Where is your radio that a scrolling display distracts your attention from the road?  I like being able to look down and see what a song is if I recognise it but don't know the name.  I don't find myself watching it the whole time?

In my car its just on the headdeck, but its still very annoying since its quite visible while driving, but in the other one I drive often its in the middle of the dash right by the odometer. Also in that one it renames the presets on the screen so that they are meaningless snippits of a song title.

Who's changing the station name in Auckland?

Here in Wellington ZM are the only ones transmitting any track info. All the other stations are just transmitting their station names. It's great to see RDS actually being used in NZ now because means you can drive around without having to change channels, something that was always annoying in Wellington with multiple frequencies for all the big stations. It's just a shame nobody used the TP functions yet for traffic reports.

MoreFM down here appear to send RT occasionally, I've noticed it on my Denon amp at home. They don't do song titles, just advertising for the station. ZM Wellington transmit the song details using RDS but I personally don't find it annoying. Certainly when I was in he UK this year I'm positive there were stations using RDS for song info and station info as well, unless of course there are now car factory fitted stereos that do RT as well.
