xpd: A container ship with containers full of food. Anchor off shore.

And start your own rock radio. Oh wait, different movie...

The problem with a prison is that they're designed to keep people in, not out.

The best solution would be to have a cabin in the wilderness that is only approachable from 1 or 2 sides, and good clearings around it. On top of this, have the container buried in the ground for a last ditch hideout. Setup properly you could last for years somewhere like that - realistically you have no idea how long the zombie apocalypse will last.

The other thing you will need is a good 4x4 to get you to said location. Something like a good ex-military hummer. The truck mentioned above will be no good as the maneuverability is too poor and eventually the wheels will get bogged up with zombie body parts.

Another thing in the preparation, you need to have thought about what you'll do if the zombie invasion happens while you're not at home. It is unlikely that you will take your hummer with you wherever you go, nor is it likely that the family will be close.

Ad lastly, and in my opinion, the most important thing, you must take other NON RELATED women with you. It will be your responsibility to repopulate the world once this is all over and we don't want to have inbred hillbillies running around.

One of the biggest factors has to be weather the zombies are only nocturnal or not..

if they are nocturnal, then there is a lot more options available. you would have plenty of time to prepare.

particularly against traditional zombies, you'd want to construct flamethrowers, and make sure you have plenty of shotgun goodness.

around wellington there are actually a number of old army bases that are still quite well fortified,  but you'd need numbers to keep them fortified, you couldn't hold them by yourself.

if you had enough people then the ideal HQ would be the Civil defence HQ under the beehive, however you'd need armaments and people to clear out the resident zombies, if there were any.

as for transport, I'm pretty sure a good SUV such as a Toyota Landcruiser or similar would be sufficient, find yourself a modified 4WD.

for up close weaponry, the old shotgun is a must, ideally a semi-auto, double barrel would be a last resort only.

hand to hand I'd have a couple of Katanas or similarly easily wielded swords, not for use dual handed, but in case you get one stuck in a zombie skull or similar and had to pull another one out.

davidcole: Didn't Will Smiths character try this idea in "I am Legend".  While problably not strictly Zombies, the principal was the same.....and (SPOILER ALERT BELOW)

depends on the extended ending or not...

that was his lab though, not a fortified bunker... i know its a little pedantic but...

ahh yes but that was only because that lady didnt cover her tracks.. other then that he survived there for years

this also is a very nice idea, however for the initial zombie invasion surely hiding somewhere close to hand would raise the chance of surviving

and then when its quiet you can treck to the hills and begind the arduous task of repopulation

I guess it all depends on the exact type of zombie that we are dealing with.

The type A zombie which infects people when bitten who then become zombies or type B which just kill everything.

If it is type A I would be heading for the hills before the mass is reached where it is too hard to get out.

But on a serious note, can anyone speculate how long the invasion will last for? In the typical documentary on zombies, they don't need food (that we are told about anyway).

Citation needed! AFAIC Zombies will eat brains.

Ernie Kaltenbrunner: What about the pain?
1/2 Woman Corpse: The pain of being DEAD!

1/2 Woman Corpse: I can feel myself rotting.
Ernie Kaltenbrunner: Eating brains... How does that make you feel?
1/2 Woman Corpse: It makes the pain go away!""""

it depends on what you take as Canon,

in some theories, the Zombies will die of starvation eventually (such as zombies in 28 days, or other movies where the zombification is infectious...
however, you are in trouble if they are resourceful such as in I Am Legend...

but you are also in trouble if it is a tradition zombie, as per the above quote, it won't stop coming for brains until its rotted to dust.

which adds all sorts of logistical issues for repopulating the human race, every time someone dies.. they come back as a zombie.. it would be troublesome, although it'd certainly encourage cremation!

Bummer... I think the Zombie Apocalypse has begun:

Huge cop callout in the CBD. 15ish squad cars involved with 2 cops apiece. Seem to be checking out the river exits.

We all know from previous "documentaries" zombies eat brains and then radio for more cop cars...

These are the only medical references that I know of - of course zombies may want to eat brains - but do they need to do so to survive?

According to Dr Logan in "Day of the Dead" they do not need to eat to survive and even with their stomach removed they can exist for several years without consuming anything.

According to the original Dawn of the Dead script, and several short snippets of dialogue by Professor Millard Rauche that made it into the final movie, they consume only warm human flesh. They will not eat cold dead meat (unless, perhaps, it has been heated up to simulate recently-killed meat)

I'd befriend Chuck Norris, and get out onto the water in a ship, as previously said.

The critters in I am Legend were vampires, not zombies.

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/m/richard-matheson/i-am-legend.htm

Hence their need to stay out of sunlight, strength and speed.

Sheesh, you kids need to read more. :)
