Stupid poll on yahooextra; http://nz.yahoo.com/

No - it's a crazy amount of money!
 83%
4203 votes
Yes - they deserve it at their level of responsibility
 15%
743 votes
Not sure
 3%
138 votes

Even more silly is the people who voted, I am not sure if people understand but if you pay peanuts for a top exe or CEO; you might as well get a farmer to run our top companies.

I don't know about you, but executives deserve to be paid what they earn just like politicians do. People may disagree because their supermarket job is not taking them places only at $12/hr but that's their fault for working in a supermarket.

I don't even bother with polls, because most of the time they have silly questions with silly answers available.

You know, my garden had all these flowers that were higher than the rest, so what I did was go and cut the tops off the tall ones.

You should run a poll on whether polls are silly and whether the answers that you have provided are equally silly.

It'd make the whole thing credible, as it'd be from the head geek.

I wish I could earn $1 million per year.

I guess I could do and Enron and pay myself that.

Do top-level executives deserve to be paid million-dollar salaries?

Some do, some don't. Just my opinion.

Internet polls aren't worth the paper they aren't printed on.

Income equality is a serious concern in many countries, in many cases western society has come full circle back to almost a having a class based structure again.

There are all sorts of bad side effects for society as a whole when there is a big gap between the bottom and the top.

I think it's interesting we have a minimum wage but not a maximum wage.  It's worth noting some countries have social culture which stops executive pay getting out of hand eg: Japan.  Another example is the US military where the highest paided is not allowed to be more than 8x the lowest.

Slightly related - does anyone know why Transpower (the company which provides electrical transmission around the country) has 300 staff who are paid $100,000 or over?

A shortage of skills or the exploitation of monopoly power has allowed a privileged few to capture very high rates of pay.

Sectors such as fnance are notorious for sky-high salaries and big bonuses, as remuneration committees are self-regulating and accountability to shareholders is often weak.

You can see how some of that might apply to Transpower.

Anyway this is a good read if you have some spare time over Easter

I hate to go against the grain, but I feel most executives are paid too much. When an executive earns hundreds of times more than the majority of their employees, it creates all sorts of problems (rigid class stratification being one). Honestly, this has been discussed for the better part of a century. Just read something from or about Joseph Stalin, Karl Marx, or Max Weber.

Stalin, let me see... Isn't this one that paranoid schizofrenic guy with a big moustache with a pechant to killing even the closest people to him? Yes, thought so.

And Karl Marx? Oh, right "Workers of the world, unite!"... Sure, right.
