Finally!  I have my last three web sites...Now I can migrate them to somewhere that is a much warmer, happier place, with sunshine, and little bunnies.

Yes the videos worked.  Thanks for the links.

I would like to note the during this entire mess, www.islands.co.nz was actually UP....Do we not use our own company Mr Clarke?  I bl&&^$y wonder why?

It is actually not a bad thing to host their own website somewhere else, such as in another datacentre, incase they have problems. At least in that case they still be contacted and they can post announcements on their website.

I have tried the islands website and it looks to be down. http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/islands.co.nz

It's not just you! http://islandsdotcodotnz looks down from here.

Check another site?

Well I've shifted my website/email accounts to www.superhost.co.nz (recommended by rob)  after I got the UDAI from Islands.  I was back on line in minutes. Smile

thanks for those Fair Go links, robbyp ..

.. Mr Clarke does seem to be a bit of an a...hole!

pity, because the service WAS very competitive - In fact I'm still reluctant to shift, given that I know there can be hidden fish-hooks in shifting hosts

e.g. my previous provider, without warning us, suddenly started preventing php jobs from fetching external web pages! all in the name of "security"

I notice that superhost does cost extra ($300+ p.a.) for NZ-based servers, whereas domains4less cost less than $100/year to do so.

I would be interested in other's findings/experiences etc

I have signed up as a reseller with Hostgator and shifted everything there. I had 2 sites with webhostingnz and another 2 with Freeparking.

So far no problems, I can chat online and via phone any time with their support people.

Ive been with domains4less for a while now as well as webhostings,cpanel on domains4less isn't as good but at $5 a month for 200mb I'm working through the short commings I run the same site (two domain names) one .com the other .co.nz on both as a way to back up total cost 8.95 mth with more market share

Yes, after spending an evening looking at the current offerings (much more choice than a couple of years ago) one of the best regarded options seemed to be openhost;

 then I discovered that domains4less = openhost = webdrive (which Redjungle recommends) so that is definitely looking like a good alternative;

My cost would go from $53/yr to approx. $94, but disk space goes from 50mb to 200mb, which is a good thing since my Joomla cms alone takes up over 30mb, (yeah I know modx is much leaner but Joomla is a much more rounded product for club use)

SO I think I'll move at least one of my two sites and see how it goes!

You're comparing unmetered hosting on a hosting cluster, versus 200MBdiskspace/2GB traffic hosting on what looks to be a single server hosting, so not really a fair comparison. A hosting cluster is where the different hosting components such as email, databases are hosted on seperate servers, where single server hosting, all services are on a single server. The benefit of cluster hosting is that if one server goes down, it doesn't knock out all services, unlike with a single server system.
