Anyone have any idea what was going on from about 8pm to 9pm (ish) tonight. We has some serious activity going on with some major low level helicopter action. Nothing on any of the local news sites at the moment though,

Iroquois have been up around uni (Albany) all day doing formation work and take-off/landing at Whenuapai as I drove past. Could be related? Then again, Iroquois have a very distinctive sound which I think you would have mentioned.

Iroquois were playing in around the city tonight so most likely an extension of that.

I assume it was a very loud thud thud thud type noise as referred to by nickd?

P.S. Iroquois = the Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopters, they are probably doing some counter terrorist type training with Police/STG/CTAG/insert other letters here

I noticed two blacked out helicopters in the city, hovering over a couple of buildings. Pretty crazy that you can hear them but not find them since they have no lights going.

SAS does do training CT training in the city

The helicopters were flying over there all afternoon. Couldnt work out the colour though cause of all that thoroughly enjoyable rain (forgot my wet weather gear for my bike)..

They are starting to get annoying now.  Just hovering there making all that damn racket.

And how do other airborne craft see them?  Surely an accident waiting to happen?  Hopefully not over my place...

It's SAS training.

Seen by TCAS if equipped, visually by the pilot, or by notice from ATC.

Yeah, they where flying over and sweeping low down around auckland uni yesterday and today. Then they where flying round mission bay tonight. No lights on at all apart from a small red one at the rotor.
