Satch: Just got a reply from TM:

Thanks for contacting us. When an auction closes online both parties are given the ability to place whatever feedback they feel is appropriate. However if another member puts a feedback on you that's clearly in retaliation to one you've put on them let us know as we can remove those under our Code of Conduct.

You can get a refund of your success fees by taking the following steps:

1. Go to your 'Sold items' page
2. Select the auction you require a refund for
3. At the bottom of the 'Seller's options' box there is a heading that states 'If the sale falls through...'
4. Below this there is a link that states: To request a refund of your success fees 'click here'.

Please note that the refund process can only be started after the auction has been expired for 3 days. This is to encourage both buyer and seller to complete the trade.

A refund claim must be made within 28 days of the end of the auction or the expiry of any fixed price offer. If it has been more than 28 days please contact us for more information.

Depending on the number of refunds you have requested and the value of the refund, your refund may be automatically processed. If this is the case then no blue kiwis will be placed.

Otherwise, we will email the buyer and ask them for their side of the story. Once we have this, or after a maximum of 5 days, we will make a decision on whether you are eligible for a refund and email you the outcome.

Please note: if your refund is approved, you need to confirm that you still require it by clicking the link in the email.

If a refund is granted a comment from Trade Me (Blue kiwi) will be placed on both your feedback and the buyer's feedback record - this will not affect your overall feedback rating. You should also post feedback on any members that you deal with.

If you have further questions regarding this issue please reply and we will answer your email as soon as possible.

Interesting to see that you can challenge negative feedback if it is clear it is for retaliation only.

Very good.  You'll be sweet now

The answer is pretty simple really. Ebay changed the way their feedback system works a while back for the same reasons mentioned. TradeMe should follow suit:

  • Sellers can leave only positive ratings for buyers. That means buyers should feel free to leave honest Feedback without fear of retaliation. We also have safeguards in place to protect sellers against unfair negative or neutral Feedback.

How about this one. A bidder won the auction and paid the money into my account (just over $50). We traded emails for the pick up of the goods but they have never collected the goods. It has been over 6 weeks!
I could place feedback that they are a fantastic trader but they may in turn give me a bad rap, so at this stage I have not placed any feedback and have put the goods aside.

I am not going to relist the item as it really doesn't belong to me any more. Go figure.

That would be as equally annoying.  Now you have to hold on to the crap you were trying to sell!  But for how long?...

You have 45 days, I think, from the end of the trade to make / amend your feedback - if you feel strongly about him, make a note in your diary...!

I think a better way to do the feedback thing is have separate feedback ratings for being a seller and being a buyer as anyone can buy stuff and get good feedback and then it shows they are supposedly a trustworthy TM person. However they can be shocking as a seller but you may buy from them as they have a good feedback rating but it could just be they bought a lot of stuff.

That to me is the biggest flaw in it's feedback system.

they do.  go to someones feedback page and you can see the feedback as a seller and feedback as a buyer.

IMO feedback rating should also always show the priceof the goods that were sold/bought.

if someone has lots of good feedback from selling $1 items,  then suddenly lists plasma TVs the pricing history would show them up to be a likely scammer.

I totally agree with you Satch, it is completely unfair. Why they can't adopt eBay's system I don't know. I've left bad feedback a few times for people and then blacklisted them, but fortunately they never wrote bad feedback for me. Even though the buyers were always in the wrong in my cases it still concerned me how easy it would have been just for them to write a negative retaliatory comment.

Fortunately I'm still at 100%, but after seven years got my first neutral feedback and even that gutted me - sold an Xbox 360 game, it was a problem at his end that I tried to help him remedy, but his feedback throws it back on me and makes it look like I'm the bad guy. Not fair at all!

Unfortunately that's how Kiwi's operate so since trade me is a kiwi company, that is how they run their system in the way that if you post bad feedback on trade me user's the other trade me user can reply or in some cases retaliate.  So in some bad cases like satch mentioned before - you don't really get anywhere with it?

If you look out our justice system it works in a similar sort of way - go run some little boy over with ya boy-racer car, show a lot of remorse about it and say you’ll never do it again and yep that's right you'll get let off - 2 years minimum or even better home D.

Ok, I finally got to the bottom of the issue I was having with my buyer.  After a text to him this morning asking if he was going to come through and collect the item today, I just got this text response (verbatim):

Hey, i'm sorry i've been really busy.  I tryed my mates wireless n router and it's having the same problem as yours. Even though im not in a flat. I had my brother to try modern warfare online and it connects at first but comes up with a connection problem after a minute into the game. And when i connect with ethernet wire it works fine. Im realy very sory to waste your time but i don't want 2 spend 140 dollers on something that doesn't work. I hope you understand. And i can deposit the trade me fees you've been charged into your account so you can relist it again . Thanks

The item I was selling was the Xbox wireless N adaptor, and in the auction I stated that it wasn't suitable for my situation living in an apartment due to interference.  I guess that's what he is referring to, as I've never discussed any of my "issues" with this guy.

Anyway, I texted him straight back and told him I will be reporting him to Trademe as he entered into a legally binding contract when he placed his bid.

The cheek of some people totally astounds me...

I dont like that it is a permanant record of things that are bought and sold.

So often I ask sellers not to leave feedback and they do, so then what I have bought is on a permanent list for all to see. Bought some stereo stuff a few years back for a song and wanted to resell the parts I didnt want and people looked back and saw that I got the lot for less than I was asking for parts and were acting like I was evil and filling the questions with all sorts of accusations of trying to rip people off.

The way my friend runs his TM business seems better, you don't get feedback unless you reply to an email asking for it, most don't, but I guess that's what happens when you sell the sorts of thins that they do.

I guess it is my lucky couple of weeks on TM.  Another item I had for sale had a bid which reached reserve (closes this Thurs), then a couple of days later the bidder asked me to remove the bid as his wife had just purchased a similar item.  Now my item is unsold again...

    You gotta love it!

That sucks.. TM should strict the rules for when placing a bid - if you bid you buy it!

I don't think they keep the amounts listed after a certain time frame.
