mecow: MediaMonkey for everything music related. From iphone sync to complete organisation. With MediaMonkey you can get it to automatically move all music to folders based on tag info (once you have automatically updated all tag info obviously). Also is great for finding album art!

Its other major plus is the fact that it isn't a slug on my reasonably fast computer like itunes is.

VLC for all other media.

+1 for MM and VLC. As Mecow say, works well with a variety of MP3 players ( Samsung, Ipods, etc)

Tried Itunes once. Never again. Totally messed up my library, importing and downloading covers and descriptions, and overwriting what I had already painstakingly tagged. Maybe there were settings that prevented something like that from happening, but if that was Itunes default settings, gah !!!

Been making tentative forays into Win7's WMC as a media player - I do like the large clear layout for navigation, and is touch-screen friendly. However, a colleague recommends Ultimate Jukebox as a touch-enabled media player, so that is also on the test list. Whichever one that my aged and half-blind Mum can work out how to use will be the winner - the ultimate in user friendly-ness ..

Or too embarrassed to admit it :-)

Yeah the fact you can sync almost all MP3 players without changing software/maintaining two libraries is a big plus. I always had issues with the winamp iphone plugin.

Also some of the custom scripts for mediamonkey that you can find online are great for organising a huge media library

Watch it doesn't kill your downloaded album art, especially on a 10" interface.  I think I checked W7 and it still did it.  Converts 500x500px images (or larger) to 200x200.

Itunes on the HTPC so i can use the remote app on my iphone to control it - awesome.

Foobar2000 for listening on my headphone rig as it supports ASIO to my soundcard. I also have itunes on this machine for syncing our various ipods.

I use itunes folder watch to automatically update itunes with new tracks and remove dead tracks when tags are changed or tracks are removed.

I use mp3tag for tagging and dbpoweramp to convert flac to alac so all of my lovely lossless sounds can play on my ipod\iphone and in itunes.

Audio:

Songbird or Foobar normally, both have lots of great addons/plugins.

Video:

Media Player Classic Home Cinema
VLC for anything that doesn't play.

I'm going to vote for Windows Media Player 12 for PC, iTunes for Mac. Winamp used to have a big advantage in terms of compatibility, speed, and memory footprint. Since WMP10, however, Microsoft has done a lot of work on all of the above. Almost everything has plug and play built in. I find it faster than Winamp with large media libraries. Most importantly for me, it's clean and simple.

I went from winamp to iTunes, and then winamp got ipod support so I went back.

iTunes is bad. Try this test, create a shortcut for itunes on the desktop, then creat a quick launch icon for that shortcut, now delete the shortcut and click the quick launch button.

Hurray, you've now broken itunes.

iTunes.

It's simple. Like me.

I use a mix of the free Zune client and Windows Media Center. Also I occasionally use Windows Media Player or Media Monkey (mostly for converting audio files). iTunes is rubbish imho...

iTunes - it works with my iPod and needs minimal maintenance.

foobar2000, switched from WinAmp back in the day and never looked back. Supports iPod and is fully customisable.

If I need to upgrade firmware I simply use the g/f's laptop which still has iTunes on it.

I've been using iTunes solely since I've had an iPod and then an iPhone. Works well for me, and is very fast in OS X.

For video I tend to use VLC the most on standalone computers. However on my dedicated Mac mini for media playback I use Plex. Once I get back to NZ I'll be making another dedicated WMC box - can't wait!
