tardtasticx: When tech companies say GB = GigaBits when it should be GigaBits and your "8GB" iPod is only 6.9GB. Just like a 1TB Hard drive is only 931GB.

it is Gigabytes, not gigabits.  Gigabits are 1/8 of the size of a gigabyte.

Don't you mean Gb?

Gb in the short form. But its the same if you write GigaBits right? Because then its in full and you know what unit its actually in

Sorry I should have said:

"When tech companies say GB = GigaBits when it should be Gb and your "8GB" iPod is only 6.9GB. Just like a "1TB" Hard Drive is only 931GB."  Notice the " " around the manufacturers stated size

How much disk space is on the Geekzone server?...

This week specials are:

- alarm systems that use ConnectID that don't work with VoIP
- 111 service providers that don't know my address
- telephone companies who take money off my friends to stuff they're not even using
- telcos that don't know anything about their own products
- sales people who can't just say "I don't know sorry"
- helpdesk staff who won't escalate me to someone with a clue
- helpdesk staff who can't configure their customers equipment that they supplied
- alarm monitoring companies that don't actually do anything when your alarm vanishes

Ok.. perhaps I should balance with the things I do like...

- VoIP providers who provide great cheap services - 2talk (though I'm going to look at wc next as well)
- Geekzone guys who just help out with stuff all day without getting pissie at me because I ask so many insane questions (to many names to mention)
- ATAs that work

Is this a question? I can't see how this can be a "tech annoyance"... Unless you'd like to have the disk space for yourself?

lol... no, the point was that I have a lot of pet tech annoyances most days, I was just a bit concerned about filling up the disk if I listed them all ;)

SteveON: I know Chris from NBR just published a story on this... but It got me thinking what is your top tech annoyance?

Mine are...
1, ISP's that crash when you need them (thanks telstra)
2, No service whilst in mobile network coverage
3, Old school spinning disk HDD's...
4, Laggy Mobile phones
5, Laptops that turn themselves on at 3am

My pet IT hate is people who know diddly squat about computing or networks.....and don't know it, won't listen....and can't be told.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

My parents were without internet for 3 days while I was at a mates house because the modem dropped and only comes back if you reboot it. Can't even remember how many times I've taught them how to do this stuff but its just over their heads apparently. Lol.

For me it would have to be the situation where you click on something, the system doesn't immediately respond, you sit there waiting on the assumption that it's loading, then you eventually realize that it's not doing anything and it just failed to register your mouse click.

Crashing apps would be a close second.

Ahh, yes. We have a rule at work that anything that can take over 2 seconds to run must show some indication that the app is "thinking". Of course, we sometimes forget to follow that rule...

Thats far too long, should be 1/4 second or so IMO, if somethings not happened by the time you have finished clicking to let you know its happened, or is happening then you will click again.

Terabyte hard drives are 1TB, or one trillion bytes. this tots up to being around 976 GiB, (gigabytes in binary, or gibibytes)
So, the disks are manufactured to metric terabytes, while your computer measures them in binary terabytes (tebibytes) (TiB)

Like 1MiB=1,048,576 B while 1MB is 1,000,000B

Many Linux distros state the whole KiB/MiB/GiB/TiB explicitly, like with RAM and HDD size counts.

Anyhoo. My tech peeves are:

Phones whose predictive text saves spelling mistakes from traditional text, and/or will never remove them.
People who reject other software (OS, browser etc) because it's different / not Microsoft.
Apple software. (The hardware is amazing, but the software is so closed and restrictive.)
Also, of course, noobs who don't understand the technology. Which is fair enough though, it's not for all of us.

And how impossible it is to upgrade some of the hardware.. Designs are fantastic though. Never ever forget my iMac G4
