With multiple tabs open the cpu and disk can get quite busy with the browser running utterly pointless java loops & flash no one can see etc.
Google Chrome browser has it's Tools -> Task Manager option showing processor/memory use for each tab and a kill option for each tab process.
Firefox runs all tabs in one process - but has javascript profiler addons to see which specific scripts are wasting your cpu.
I use java controller/blocker extensions (noscript, notscripts) to stem the multiple tab resource waste. (Fixes the Stuff thing as well). I also use a flash blocker extension. Makes a big difference.
and, back to the topic..
At present, Stuff (example) does have a five second countdown and a stop button but it is completely tab unaware and will (eventually) always start playing no matter if the tab is focused or not.
The Sydney Morning Herald (example) player/script is tab aware. The video does not play or download until the new tab is focused. The countdown begins only when the tab is focused, and will even stop if the tab loses focus. Nice work : )
