Hi,
Anyone know of insurance companies that are writing new policies at the moment for the Canterbury region? I just spoke with Tower and was told they are not and they couldn't tell me when or if that would change

Who do you bank with? Have you try approaching your bank to see if they offer insurance package? I'm with ASB Bank and been happy with their insurance packages.

Hi Chiefie,
Thanks for that suggestion, seems obvious now. I'm waiting on a call back from Kiwibank...to find out what they can offer

Are you buying a house? If so the existing house insurer should transfer the current policy to you (a requirement if there is an outstanding EQC claim). Ask for a policy number and give them a call.

If you are buying a house your lawyer should know the process and be able to help. If you don't have any insurance and are trying to get some now the chances of any insurance company writing a new policy are slightly above zero.

Apparently it's standard practice for there to be a 28 day freeze on new policies after a big aftershock (and the original quake), although that should have ended on Monday. We bought a house April 2010 and had a lot of trouble getting insurance (1920s timber house that hadn't been re-gibbed or rewired) and even though I had an electrician booked in to rewire the house straight away I couldn't get insurance anywhere. In the end I used the bank we were getting a mortgage with (National Bank) and they were able to sort it out for us, basically they can't give you finance if you can't get insurance so it's in their interest to sort it out.
