Kyanar:
geekiegeek: So do we hold back the kids that can afford it because some cant?

Not allowing schools to mandate expensive technology as part of the stationery list is hardly "holding back" the kids.  That's rubbish.

If schools want to take this approach, they should be providing the devices for all students, not putting it on the parents to provide them.  If they chose to, they could even make part of the cost back by setting up a scheme allowing students/families to buy them at the end of the year.  If they insist on requiring parents to bring them in, then WINZ needs to start paying out to buy laptops and iPads (and that'll go down a treat with National and ACT supporters) or the school itself needs to find a way to ensure that all students can get these devices affordably (maybe the school could run a layby scheme or something where parents can pay in instalments for a device, and it stays at the school overnight until paid off).

But even still, it all rolls back to "Every Child has the Right to a Free Education".  If we start requiring them to bring in $300-$1200 devices just to learn at the same pace as the rest of the class then.. well, yes.  The other kids should be held back.  Every kid needs education, and that education should be universal.  If parents want to send their kids to a school demanding iPads and laptops, then that parent needs to send their kid to private school.  End of story.

The school did offer a payment scheme. If you choose to have kids you had best plan to pay for them to get the best education possible. and unless we are all taxed at 70% then parents are going to have to take some responsibilty in paying for that education.

The days of a free education in NZ are long gone my friend. Also what to you think these kids are going to be doing after they leave secondary school? I doubt you can go through uni without owning a device and a large number of jobs these days require some level of computer skills. And if other countries that we compeat with for jobs etc go down this path we will be left even further behind.

Reading threads on the Yahoo website news article shows overwhelming opposition. Seems the parents do not want technology in schools, and prefer the traditional methods.

If this is the will of the people then the Govt needs to be told to back off ICT and leave that to other institutions?

tdgeek: The principal was on Campbell Live. iPads are NOT being made compulsory. A device is. It can be an iPad, tablet, netbook, but they recommend an iPad solely due to battery life.

Their school now has UFB and almost all of the school now has wifi. Now, if they are this connected, and there has been such a push to get schools setup this way, its of no use if the kids dont have their device.

In a few years, this will be the norm, I am sure if the word iPad wasn't mentioned it would not have made a sensationalist story. If the headline was "School making a Netbook compulsory for Year 9", its not a story worthy of Camplbell Live

So what is this school with it's Ultra Fast Broadband" as the principle put it  going to do with it and iPads.  Watch  movies all day in 1080P??

Still haven't figured out yet why schools need 100Mbit BB for..

hairy1: The problem I have with the ipad (in fact any tablet) is that it is primarily a consuming device not a content creation device. Surely if our kids are going to have a device it should be one that it easy to create content on. Typing an essay on an ipad would drive me nuts.

Very true.  I hate typing on my iPad and could see it causing fairly severe wrist damage if regularly typed on without an external keyboard.

I like the idea of electronic education and what it can do to help parents, students, and teachers to enhance the learning experience but in this case I am skeptical of the benefit.  I'd be concerned about theft and breakage of the device (whatever it may be), and about goofing off in class.

Like others I'd like to hear how the device is supposed to be used.

Hee Hee that is the missing part of this puzzle. Once we hear what and how the devices will be used, that will either make many of us think its great, or have second and third thoughts.

Needless to say they wont be open to the internet, I assume a national intranet with filtered access to certain websites. Clearly not for playing on.  But they need to add value over a good textbook, and the ability to gather more and better information, but its the teachers that need to teach. I recall my physics class was mainly writing notes...................

When I was at school we had an AV tech who spent a great amount of time recording and cataloging TV content.

One person could now do that for the entire world, freeing up all those techs to do face to face work with students.

That is just one extremely simple example.

Yes I agree with that point.  OSI - what consideration has been made?

Given the posts Mark made yesterday, showing up that the school has put in more thought that the media present, I'd be interesting to hear the response to the OSI question.

Yes, I support your views as well.

I reviewed a number of the Stuff comments and the Campbell Live tape last night, and got the impression that lots of parents have very little perception about the importance of IT in their kids future.

Many of the posts by you guys and the media comments leave me wondering if there's a very big perception that these things are simply toys and serve no value.

I don't agree they are toys, I don't agree they serve no value, but I would agree that's a big perception problem that we, as a technical community, need to address.

I knew I should have asked if any one played the trumpet!

Last time I bought one, it cost me $450AUD on a discounted special.

Edit:  I might add, can anyone here ski?

I think the posts are not saying these are toys. There are two things going on here:

  • Are these the right devices, or just the fashion de jour?
  • Should we first teach kids to "think" and "solve problems" beforehand?

As the principal said the iPads were recommended due to battery life, so the students could use other tablets or netbooks or I guess, laptops.  As to being the right devices, it depends what the use will be. Gatherng information like a HUGE textbook? If so, a tablet that can be used horizontally and vertically is better than a horizontal netbook.

Textbooks contain the information, teachers need to teach that, explain that, clarify that. I don't see that technology will be doing the teaching, or that kids will be taught where to get the answer, they will have access to more of that information. Much like reading a chapter of 3 textbooks rather than one will help make some topics "click"

Really, until I see how they would be used, I have no firm opinion yet. If its for a larger reference base, I am all for it, if its to "google to get the answer" I do not want it to go ahead

There's no need to tell me the technology replaces textbooks. There's a reason why I carry an Amazon Kindle everywhere I go, instead of three or four paperbacks ;)

I'm just worried that people can leave a lot of the explanation and tutoring to automated means, expecting people will learn by repetition, when a bit of teaching is needed. Teaching is important because with that personal contact it's possible to find out what is causing the pupil to fail and specifically target it.
