Hi,

Could somebody please help me identify this cut of meat please? We've been given it by friends and think its wild pig. Just trying to figure out how to cook it.

Cheers.

Looks like a lamb mini-roast (leg).

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that's not what it is. I should have mentioned before it has "thick flank" written on it, and is from some hunters. I'm wondering if it could be venison?

Looks a lot like wild Venison which has a deep rich color and strong texture. If it is you're in for a treat!

As Kingjj says, definitely looks like venison.  Thick flank is essentially from the top front part of the rear leg traditionally.  Could have been beef (our homekill looks nice dark red like that - often used for corned beef!) but if its from hunters, that makes beef far less likely!!  Also looks very lean, which might tend to favour the venison option over beef as well.  Enjoy Smile.

Why don't you ask the person who gave it to you? :)

And just to help you with NonparayingMantis' earlier reference to accompaniments to long pig:

Wild venison certainly has strong aroma and flavour - being a farm boy, I've eaten homekill meat alll my life, btu I still find some wild venison a bit flavoursome personally.

The people who gave us it were given it by someone else and they weren't sure!

It is really flavoursome, not to my liking at all. My other half loves it so a great meal tonight for them. Something else for me. I've had homekill venison leg before and it was beautiful. A young venison I believe. It did not have a strong flavour at all., just really tender and tasty. This meat today is totally different, really full on flavour.

I hope not! We were in Vietnam a few years ago and hubby chose Thit Cho from the menu - dog meat we realised later. It had a disturbing taste and I couldn't eat it. Men like the taste of dog meat apparently.

I'm intrigued that people eat things when they don't know what it is and it was given to them by a friend who was given it by a friend.
