There is absolutely nothing to indicate this is the case, and is nothing but people spreading FUD.

Even those trying to purpetuate the rumor have had trouble trying to produce a single piece of evidence to sustain the myth, the ship hasn't even visited any of the ports in Australia that ship yellow cake.

However the sensitivity around shipping nuclear material would lend to the belief that it would be done secretly. I mean would they post transport times & dates, shipping lines & ports?

Just hypothesing...

Shipping data isn't that secretive, ships are classifed and their AIS data (which is what has been collected by numerous people to graph the position) has category information that states whether ships are carrying dangerous goods for example.

The company in Stuff today is receiving nothing but free publicity for their "specialist technology and software" is anything but, for a few hundred $ anybody can buy hardware and receive the very same data tracking ships that are transmitting AIS data.

crikarika: I'm here in TAuranga and signed up to help clean up. Went around and took some pictures (14th) of pilot bay, alonng the strip and Papamoa. To play devils advocate, thats both disingenuous and naive. Considering a large % of the worlds illegal smuggling from drugs, to weapons, to human beings are carried via shipping lines, the ability to secret cargo is well documented.

If it was as transparent as you claim that would be impossible. Patrick Gower last year broke the story that for more than 30 years Australian ore has been shipped through our ports.

So either you claim hes a liar, or you are privy to information no else is?!? ;)

I'll answer that by simply posing a question to you -

Next month there is an election in NZ. We have opposition parties that are desperate to gain a political advantage over the Government. If there had been dangerous cargo on board, and even the slightest hint or rumor that dangerous or radioactive goods had been on board, do you think we would have heard about this by now? I do..

No idea if that is a public database or what kind of advance notifications are required. Although, as I understand it the Rena had not called into any ports where you would expect it to load the stuff, unless you know different?

Seems unlikely.

Nothing like the uninformed or the activists using RADIOACTIVE as a baseless scaremongering tactic.

Yellow cake is barely radioactive at all and is of negligible risk so can be shipped in steel drums. There are no special handling requirements by way of clothing, etc for people handling these drums.

It has been shipped through NZ ports regularly for decades - it is classed as an IMDG Class 7 good mostly for tracking reasons (as it is later refined into fissionable material) and because like many other things (such as oil

) it is toxic if inhaled or eaten. There was a manifest of DG's aboard the Rena published somewhere, as best I recall it did not include yellow cake but it would not be an issue if it did except to the extent that the media and the greenies would for their own selfish purposes be ensuring everyone paniced by shouting about it as if we were all about to suffer a local Chenobyl.

The results all ploted with "specialist technology and software" i.e. Internet and OziExplorer.

Most of the AIS data online from sites like this is all provided by people running their own hardware and nodes that feed this data into global databases, this is also how sites such as Flight24 can offer realtime aircraft tracking.
