robbyp:
michaelmurfy: Remember, cheapest is not normally best. Free or cheap hosts will normally make no guarintee of uptime, data security, server security etc and are normally oversold.

From my experience, CMS websites such as wordpress run pretty slowly on the cheap ones I have used.

That's correct, since each "user" is normally allocated a small portion of teh ramz, if the ram is used then swap space is used instead causing the server / sites to run slowley.

Nice, What will it code me to have those restored?

Is there an air break?

$2.95 a month... might have to look at that one next.  That's a keen price.

Had to delve in to the T&C's a bit. Backup restore $120+GST.
Is that a usual sort of price in any case?
I have always kept my own backups though.
Don't know about an air gap.
I see you have to have a domain name hosted with them to keep the free web space open, so it's really quite similar to many other domain name packages overseas as well.
They do say "New Zealand based servers" so I should think that means a physical server located in NZ (same with the completehost).

I vaguely recall some news article a few months ago about a new datacentre opening in Auckland; I'm guessing we are seeing cheaper packages available now because of that?

Theres a new host for Kiwis and Aussies: http://www.elcheapohost.com/

START plan $NZ2/month per year subscription/1 domain, with $3 monthly, $2.50 * six monthly; MID plan is $NZ4/month/5 domains. Prices for month & six month terms cost more due to handling/management.

QUOTE:From my experience, CMS websites such as wordpress run pretty slowly on the cheap ones I have used.

REPLY: Ive several sites all hosted by elcheapohost servers, some wordpress others PHP none of which perform badly:

thehomenz.com thehomenz.co.nz webid.co.nz elcheapohost.com

QUOTE: Ensure they do regular backups.

REPLY: [x] restores are free of course this could not be abused.

Ensure theyre not just reselling another hosts services - some do this and the company selling you the service maybe in NZ, but the servers etc are run by HostGator/Dreamohost etc in the US, so the servers arent in NZ.

REPLY: Unfortunately, there are no servers located in Kiwi that are cheap, the price competition is from overseas.

If you dont like elcheapohost.com then I recommend kiwihosting.co.nz @ $10/month. I had been using them for over 10 years and their service is superb with email and phone support with support response within the hour; their datacentres are in US/Texas same as my reselling source is US based. You do get slower pings agreed, but I have no complaints about overall speed.

Now to address some other comments.

Although speed and resources are important, main issues are uptime and security. Heres a copy of my own FAQ:

==============snip========================

Ordering a web hosting service can be confusing all those technical terms which can mean nothing to some, also if you get it wrong, how is it going to effect your business?
I hope by this FAQ to help you make the right decision not based on price, but more about what you need.
First off, Elcheapohost is only cheap in name and price. I use these same servers from US which if they failed, would effect my own businesses too so I have a vested interest in the service I'm offering you. Profit from selling to you, particularly at these prices is minimum. I benefit insofar as I can use some of the webspace for my own sites (once again, if your servers give you problems, me also, so its in my interest to make sure everything is running smoothly).

SERVICES
My shared services are scaled in payments from monthly to yearly. You can change plans prior to each month completion if you like. For example, if you have the START plan and find its working well for you, but you need more than one website you can upgrade but please give me reasonable notice prior to your next monthly bill.

You can save by buying a year ahead but you may prefer to pay by month until the service proved itself suitable.

START: suitable for starting users; recommended for those starting web hosting and if successful, upgrade to a higher plan later. If your web installation is not running as you expect, I urge you to read the documentation on site which can usually help you sort any problems. I am happy to help if there is a genuine problem.
MID: suitable for small businesses eg garages, shops, restaurants.
HIGH: similar to MID, but for those with more websites and average resource needs.
PEAK: should cater for most businesses except mission-critical where I would recommend dedicated, not shared servers which are much more expensive. For example, TradeMe and Warehouse would likely use non-shared NZ servers due to liability and mission-critical issues. However, in saying this I am hosting webid.co.nz a trademe competitor with no issues whatsoever. Help is available by phone/ticket and email for PEAK plan.

DDOS issues.
This is possibly one of the most important but unconsidered specifications that any casual web hosting buyer can omit from their specs when buying from a hosting service. DDOS = Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make an online service unavailable by overwhelming it with traffic from multiple sources. Yes, there are idiots around who make it their business to take down web resources by hacking and killing your site. I should know, as it happened to me early September 2016 with a non-protected service. I lost my web hosting for 2 days until the servers were restored. Since then Ive moved and this new service has DDOS protection built-in. Hopefully, this will never happen again to me as while they deny your service, they can also hack and change your files doing all kinds of damage. Amazing what a waste of intellect can do!

Thanks to Freitasm allowing me to post this.
Reader if you dont use my hosting, please be aware of misleading common practice host services here and overseas and fall into the 'special offer' trap where advertised price skyrockets after a year. Almost always their offer is low like *$2/month with the *disclosure at bottom giving next years racked up price.
