Just bought an awesome new mattress (why did I wait so long!?!) and realised that I need awesome new pillows to along with it.

What is the best type/brand/style of pillow you have used, and what was so great about it?

Euopean pillow I had in a hotel in Germany once, same width as a normal pillow but deeper (maybe 1 1/2 times normal size, almost a square I guess), greatest pillow I have ever encountered, moulded itself to back/neck/head, was like being supported by air.

Don't know what was inside them, duck/goose down seems to be the most popular. Have only ever seen something similar once, at a Farmers store I think it was, and it was expensive ($100+ IIRC)

Head down to Briscoes and give them all a go.

I hear they may have a sale on.

Really! They hardly ever have sales on! But seriously they regularly have 30-50% off that sort of thing, but you need to make sure that they still aren't cheaper elsewhere. The good quality ones do cost more, and as with everything you do get what you pay for.

Hi,

Don't bother with the foam ones that "mould" to your body/head shape, I have been talked into a couple over the years, but in the end they are quite hard. Try and make sure you find one that doesn't elevate your head too far above your body. I like tri pillows, but they take a while to "flatten" out for me. I usually hug one corner while I sleep.

I just spent a week in the USA at luxury hotels, pillows there were amazing, but they woudn't sell me any.

Pillows are usually things you should replace relatively often.

I'm also buying a new bed this weekend. We have so many pillows. Have tried just about everything and still not satisfied. I must be hard to please. I'm not put off, I'll be looking for pillows also this weekend.

I'm not sure if you can get them here but these are the most comfortable pillow i've ever had. They are inner sprung and as a result don't go flat like other pillows.  My MIL used to own a bed shop in the goldcoast and when we stay with them they have all sorts of different pillows and this was by far the best, and they last ages.  They aren't cheap though, at least not compared to $15 ones from briscoes

There is someone selling them on ebay though

The best combination of pillow that I have ever found is the Fairydown woollen pillow.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any store (retail and online) that carries them any more.
They were made with an inner core of medium-firm polyester, and had wool wrapped around that. It made for an extremely comfortable but firm and supportive pillow. Plus, the natural heat regulation properties of wool meant it never got too hot or cold.

I have tried a few other "wool" pillows, and other 100% polyester pillows, but none have ever come close to the Fairydown.

Interesting my user name might give it away but I own a bed shop and also sell pillows

1st thing you need to know dont stand there and push a pillow against your ear it does not work.
many people can get away with just any old pillow but if you have specific needs visit a specialist where you can try a pillow by lying on a bed similar to your own. Depending on firmness of the mattress you will need a differant height pillowas you sink to a differant depth.

Things to think about

How you sleep which positions

do you scrunch the pillow up

Sleep with your arm under the pillow

Tug the pillow down and into your neck

Do you have neck/back problems, Snore, Headaches all information is useful.

In my own shop we stock about 45 differant pillows and given a little time watching how you lie and use a pillow and the above info we can sort out the correct pillow for you takes longer than a new bed sometimes.

We also have demo pillows which we lend people for a few days but i dont know many stores that do this.

It is often better to replace pillows a few weeks after a new bed as you often change some of your sleep habits.

Novadown make a wool/polyester pillow . Fairydown has disappeared from mine and many other shops as they moved all production to China, where as some of Novadown products are still made in Dunedin.

Hope this helps some of you in your search for a perfect nights sleep.

Oh man, thanks for that info. Wasn't aware that Novadown made a wool/polyester pillow. I might have to order one of these at some point in the near future.
Or, better yet, head down to the Novadown factory in Kaikorai Valley Road.
