I'm looking for short term ( months ) of broadband and don't need phone.  But from what I can see naked broadband seems to be more expensive then clothed?

The costs to an ISP for 'clothed' DSL appears cheaper, because it HAS to be supplied with a telephone line. The cost of the phone line covers the cost of the copper, hence the DSL is 'over the top' and cheaper.

With the telephone service subsidising the cost of copper, 'naked' dsl has to be charged at a higher rate.

But that's what the input costs to an ISP are; most ISP's had a small premium on their 'naked' offerings because there was no calling revenue bumping up overall return to the ISP. Pure internet doesn't have much profit at all, and constantly need new investment to keep performance up.... so money has to come from somewhere....

If you look at buying POTS + DSL, naked DSL is cheaper overall, still.

I was using TC cable only but that is being disconnected today as they would not transfer the account to me from my parents who no longer live in the house.

I don't wish to activate another TC connection here as I just signed for a one year contract with TC at home, and when I move homes to here I'll then end up with 2 1 year TC contracts on the same premises :(

So, looks like I'll have to get naked DSL instead off contract from someone.

Sorry.... I'm confused?

So what you're saying is that the building you want service in has an existing TCL HFC cable service and you just want a short term service to tide you over while you're still onsite?

Yes, but they wouldn't let me transfer it to my name.

Oh well that being the case.... 'Garrrryyyyyyy'....

I'd just wait till the TCL social media team get on deck in the morning.  I'd doubt that this isn't a problem that Gary can't sort out quick enough.

Sounds to me like you just asked the wrong question.

What you're wanting is just to be signed up, not to get a 'service transfer'.

Ya, I know, it's just semantics with words, but it's likely that the L1 CSR's don't have 'boxes' that they can tick to do what you were thinking and they're not really paid to think out of the box, they're paid to deal with the 99% of call traffic that does fit in a box.

I'm thinking that instead of getting ADSL off contract for a few months, I could just purchase a Huawei E960 with a sim card from 2degrees or vodafone, and then resell it when I no longer need it.

Got a Huawei E586Bs instead with a 6 month datapack from 2D.  Says it can do up to 21.6Mbps using HSPA+ but not getting that in Karori.  No matter, it's good enough

2D speed test in Karori
