jaxta67: Hi there, I'm just wondering if there is any specific reason you have 5ms latency. I'm located less than 50m from the cabinet and my latency is 26ms. Thanks

You'll still be on a DLM profile which has higher interleaving delays - if your line is good enough you'll eventually be put onto DLM-1 which has a 1ms latency.

I was informed today that I am on dlm 2, but my latency is still 26ms to most local servers. Others are higher. Please help?

Help with what? That sounds about right for dlm2 (I wasn't far off that when on dlm2) What does a tracert to say geekzone.co.nz or trademe.co.nz look like?

What is your ping time to ns1.snap.net.nz?

Also, are you testing via wireless or wired?

VDSL has been setup today, but seems slow for being within 50m of the cabinet. Was told it will goto max speed after a 48 hours is that correct ? Just dont reset the router, My line Single Jackpoint with Snap Naked VDSL, with the old adsl splitter still left in.

So do I leave as is and the profile will change automatically sometime?

@SamF:
I use a wired connection always (personally I don't trust wireless) and also I done several ping test to the address you gave and it shows and average of 21ms.

@jaxta: Ok, 21ms is bang on. On my line with DLM-1 I get a 5ms ping, and DLM-2 has an 8ms delay (per direction), so 5+8+8 = 21.

Hi, could you please elaborate a bit more on this. Also, I'm a bit confused now; previously with my adsl2 connection my average latency was about 10ms, which is huge jumped I'm really confused why?

would actually be 5+7+7 since DLM-1 is actually 1ms each way not zero.. but still, your talking 2ms..

21ms sounds about right

for reference, on a 8ms profile, i get 18ms locally..

@cruxis, looks like your on DLM-1 there already, that line looks pretty good for 17a too.. whats the connection uptime there? (hard to make assumptions on your line if thats been taken a few seconds after syncing and error rates arent settled..

your SNR is a little higher than normal, and thus your speeds are a little lower, but that all should settle out.. your spectrum is looking pretty good..

you were on a different latency profile on adsl, on vdsl you cant physically control this (in terms of getting your interlevings profile changes to lower pings..) this is all controlled by DLM profiles.

let your line get down  to DLM-1, hopefully your error rates are fine to stick, and you will be in the about 5ms range..

Ok, with my DLM-1 line (1ms interleaving) I'm getting a ping time of 5ms to snap's DNS server.  With the DLM-2 profile you are currently on you have an added 7ms of latency (thanks Hio for pointing my error out!) between you and the cabinet.  This latency affects both upstream and downstream traffic.  Therefore you can expect 5ms +7ms +7ms = 19ms to the snap DNS server, which is about what you're getting.

@SamF, @Hio77
Thanks for the information about latency. I still don't quite understand this though only because my adsl2 had a difference of around 13ms as appose to my current vdsl2 connection. I might have to look further into this but thanks for the information you were able to provide.

VDSL is different to ADSL because you have DLM profiles which will change your interleaving level (and therefor latency).  You are currently on DLM-2 which has an overall latency of 16ms, if your line is good enough you will be put onto DLM-1 which has an overall latency of 2ms.

@SamF:
Thanks for that. I really hope I do get to DLM-1.

EDIT:On to another case with my line (which is a bit annoying) was the encounter I had with the telecom representative today. My line attenuation which started on vdsl2 at 4 then 5 and now its 7.5 is really starting to bug me. I don't know why it is on the rise. The rep. from telecom told me I might well have a cable that is 500+m even if im located a mere 50m from the cabinet. I hope it doesn't increase much more.
