surfisup1000: How long does it take to go up to this 17a? I've been connected to snap for 3 weeks now (first week was with a faulty fritzbox, so only 2 actual weeks of connection).

My modem stats for the last 2 weeks are.....(and constantly at these levels the whole time, and I assume my connection is clean enough to move to 17a)....

From what I've read on official documentation 2.75db is the cutoff for 17a (in other words; you are less than approximately 200m from the cabinet).  However, that is an old document now so I'm unsure if this limit is still applicable.  The process for a 17a profile upgrade is not currently well understood.  One thing you might want to try is to ask snap to reset DLM on your line, given that the majority of your first 10 day period was with a faulty modem, this may well have affected DLM's view of your line.

Oh, thats too bad, but thanks for the info. I think my address is less than 200m from the cabinet but I do have quite a long driveway .

The faulty modem wouldn't sync vdsl at all, not sure if that affects DLM .

Not sure, but worth getting done anyway IMO - can't really loose anything.  Is your internal wiring sorted?

My stats were worse than that. No one really knows how long it'll take until you get switched to 17a, though it happened for at least one person within a few days.

I'm within 200m of the cabinet though on VDSL 8b my attenuation was 4-5db.

Yes, internal wiring is good  -- although, snap recommended me get a vdsl2 master filter so I did.

But, in hindsight, I'm not sure I need it .   There are 2 lines which feed into the house --- one goes directly to the vdsl modem, and the other goes to the alarm/phones.

So, snap advised me to get the vdsl master splitter because I have the monitored alarm -- but, it doesn't work anyway because my pots has been disconnected.   So, I could have just disconnected the phone line completely and joined the street cable pair directly into the modem line pair.   Although, the vdsl filter should not affect the line noise. I was thinking about removing it but maybe not worth it.

I only figured this out after taking a look at the wiring.

Redid the wiring yesterday. Connection is now just the entry wire joined with 3M gel filled splicers straight into cat5e, then a crimped rj45 into the fritz.

Not at home atm to post stats, but downstream attenuation was at 15db, up from 13db on adsl2.
Sync is about 35000 ish.

We're about 500-600m from the cabinet. No 17a for me by the look :(

Hi All,

We made some _very_ minor enhancements to our VDSL2 backend, for the most it will probably be unnoticeable but we would be interested to see if you all find your VDSL2 a bit "snappier"

You will need to re-authenticate (no need to actually re-sync)  for the new profiles to take affect.

Thanks
TheRalph

Hi 'Ralph' :)

Thanks for that info, that sounds pretty good, anything which gives us more speed is always welcome!

Are you able to give us a bit more technical detail regarding the changes so that we know what we're looking for? We're all pretty techie here so feel free to let loose with the techno-babble :)

Sam.

Hey SamF

Nothing major, just some core software updates which do list improvements for services such as VDSL2, We don't think you will see a major noticeable change (as you mostly see VDSL2 running at line speed with us anyway) but its possible you techies might even notice just slight differences :)

My modem doesnt indicate my profile. How will i know if I've ever reached the mythical 17a profile? My attenuation still reads nil, even after a week after the installation of the master splitter.

So are we talking latency, throughput or both here?

That actually indicates something is not quite right with Layer2's routing - hop 9 is in NZ but it's being routed via Australia (and this is the case looking at traceroutes off other ISP's networks too) I'd contact them about this if you have something hosted there.

Hop 2 is Snap in Mayoral Drive, Hop 3 is Snap in Equinix SYD1 Australia and Hop 8-9 look to be the Skytower.

And SamF - probably no change in latency, but maybe slightly faster speeds and more consistent throughput (Not Sync rate though as this of course is determined by the Chorus DSLAM), but as it was more an upgrade it may have little effect.

Ok, maybe a 0.1ms change in latency (but that's probably too small to be statistically significant, but I did get a 0.1-0.25Mbit speed increase (speedtest) which I confirmed with over 5 different tests before and after my PPP connection reset.

The connection is possibly a little smoother now too:

I saw the 30+ ms and was freaking out I might have fallen off DLM 1 with the power cut and outage. Its hosted with a friend so will tell him to get onto this. Didnt really notice any change in performance to be honest, so clearly snaps got what it takes over to aussie in any case.
