The only reason I can see for a different landing point is disaster tolerance. For example, you could land it at Tauranga on one side of the North Island and Raglan on the other. That's close enough to Auckland to keep transit costs down (although the terrain between Tauranga and Raglan isn't particularly friendly for laying a cable) but also far enough away from Auckland that a disaster big enough to take out the landing sites in Auckland *and* the new cable would likely result in the top of the north island being a smoking crater without anyone left to care.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Teltra has sold TelstraClear NZ to vodafone, why?

My guess is to clear the decks for a takeover of Telecom.

If this happens will the Commerce Commision determine the merger would lead to a monopoly is submarine cable services and force the merged entity to divest itself of one of its submarine cables as a condition of approval?

TGA is on the east coast though.  Beccara already pointed out all the content is in Sydney currently, and we know that Sydney already has 3 competitive cables feeding it.

Are you suggesting that another cable coming from .us would be more competitive than just pulling content from Sydney?

Ragnor: Good luck waiting for the state sector to build a new cable landing somewhere else in the country in the current economic climate, in an industry they have no expertise in and that is not core business.

[my bold]

I think you're right.  Telecommunications is not govt core business at all currently, and I very much doubt it ever will be.

However, govt needs to keep people interested in core business.   To me that means backing us up, with at least keeping us on the same page as our closest neighbour in terms of internet access to homes.

$200 million dollars of investment into the south to bring New Zealand up to par with the 'home value' that Australians get seems to me to be a good first step.

We keep reading story after story in the news about New Zealanders leaving NZ.  Is it any wonder when 'brain' jobs can't be done at home?

Govt wants tourists and farming.

My mum spends here retirement enjoying playing bridge with many friends in the US.  She tells me time and time again that she can't convince her friends to come here because they have no access to US TV while they're away and many of the 'partners' don't want to miss out on local US sport.

I can understand the feeling of not wanting to go somewhere when you're just disconnected.  I get that for many of us a holiday means being away from our computers, but for many, they want to be connected while they're away or they just don't go.

Farmers also want wifes and kids.

Today's kids aren't going to stay at home and work on farms to grow up in a disconnected world.  Even in our cities our kids are constantly heading over seas.

Personally I can see every reason for government to step up and be part of getting New Zealand to at least have a common amount of internet value with Australia.

Given that, ultimately, most of it comes from the US in the first place: yes, of course. Adding middle men is never an advantage.
