Which subdivision are you moving to? Are you certain it's BOF and not UFB already? I know of at least one subdivision where the more recent stages skipped BOF and went straight to UFB.

Depends on the subdivision stages. For instance we are moving into Soverign Palms Kaiapoi which is still in development stage but lots pre-existing

Soverign palms Stages 1 to 7 = WxC
Soverign Greens stages 1a to 3 = Snap

/edit annndddd I just realised you said that :)

Ragnor: Theres a released to GZ first plan set already out inline with UFB pricing. Rather than the higher $75/5G $99/15G most are stuck on in BoF

Just seems they are a little slow cold calling and changing everyone (or putting it online)

Yup I don't know why they stipulated 'Snap' on the website for stages 1a to 3 but those stages are of course UFB so people in those stages can pick from any UFB provider.

Its the world of competition and people demand choice but something to remember if it actually wasn't for WxC fiber fed subdivisions for the last 5 years would have had nothing !!!.

We have taken the flack from a couple of Soapbox people for being the only company able to offer a national combined Voice and Data service over a non UFB network that was deployed even before UFB was on the agenda !, where where the others then ? , you suddenly saw a big rush from others now wanting a piece of UFB which is great but really the fact was without WxC for the people in subdivisions wouldn't have a service unless WxC offered it.

And to the one or two of the soap box people here I seriously am glad you will have a choice I really am

To be fair, Maverick, nobody enjoys being in a stranglehold with a company that is clearly capitalizing on their monopoly-by-default position. Just look at the flak Telecom used to get for the same thing. Yes, good on you for being the only company to step up to the plate with BoF, but that doesn't mean to say that the people at the mercy of your pricing will feel any less stung by the experience. I expect the churn rates post April 1st will tell whether it was all worth it.

Likewise Mav, Hope I'm not a soap boxer.. I don't mean to make my comments sound like a "BOOO XNET!!" :) Have pointed out to people in the past that a lot of the time you have been stuck with pass-on costs for using the infrastructure that dictated the pricing in the first instance and noone else was willing (and later able) to jump on the bandwagon.

For ease of transfer I was hoping for some Xtra retail plans by now, but alas. I'm not holding my breath that we'll get opened up dead on Apr1 on our particular street either. So quite likely be going on on of the Fusion plans for at least a while anyways.

I'll be blue from holding my breath before we're all shifted in and about ready to go online

Telecom originally set the wholesale pricing for BoF. This wholesale pricing was significantly higher than the UFB pricing, and the plan options available were also set by Telecom. There isn't much an ISP can do unless they're willing to sell a product below cost.

With UFB pricing coming to these areas rather the BoF pricing this will obviously change.

Again Steve whilst I hear what you are saying people don't seem to understand that we were at the mercy of pricing as no options where available to us under the BOF agreement... none, but again no one wants to hear or seems to understand that and sure as heck they were no where near a UFB pricing structure.

Suddenly with clarification of UFB pricing the BOF product came into equivalency of service this happened last year obviously and hence the change of plans,

I look back now and think was it worth all the vitriol we are getting from some quarters.... One hand says no and would have been interesting to see how fibre subdivisions would have panned out for the last 5 years, but then I take a step back and think about it from a technology and service point of view. From a WxC point of view its been a huge success in proving fibre technolgy is viable PSTN replacement service and possible the blueprint from which you have seen UFB being born.  You are all well aware I have been championing a carrier grade VoIP service deployment model since we have been here purely to prove that a correctly deployed SIP network is the way of the future and we have proven that ,

I look at snide and nasty comments that have come in from a very small but vocal minority where they don't really have anything else to offer but use the forum and threads as a soapbox to go on about about wanting to change so they can get "bulk cheap Internets" with no consideration of what the constraints ware around the current offering (no matter how may times we tell them), I will actually personally be glad when they have moved as I doubt we will see a contribution to Geekzone but that's me with my cynical hat on Tongue Out. So if I ruled these people out and looked squarely at this as a technology POC and a deployment model for replacing fixed line PSTN services I will have to say we are more than happy with the outcomes. We don't see complaints around service and performance and will continue to develop the product (new CPE on the way).

So final soapbox for me Smile... happy there will be options for people so we can just get on with doing what we do well, offering the best carrier grade VoIP service out there we don't aim to be the cheapest we aim for being the best, if you want cheap there are options as well and good luck to you.

I'm pretty sure that without your service my house just would have copper wire and I would be able to use ADSL2 broadband like all other Internet users.

Without WxC you would have no internet at all, but you would have already read that numerous times already so you should know that.

I don't know how you think you would have had copper when Telecom had made the decision to no longer deploy it in new subdivisions, hence the creation of BoF in the first place. It was only because Telecom weren't in a position to offer voice services once they had started deploying BoF that WxC were called in to offer services.

What plan are you actually on now?

At what point were (are) WxC clearly capitalizing on their monopoly-by-default position, or are you talking about Telecom (as it was then)?.

It was Telecom that effectively set the pricing for BoF, not WxC. WxC purchase at a wholesale price and create a retail product from it. If the wholesale cost is high (in comparison to say current xDSL products), then the retail cost is also going to be high - they're hardly going to add the value of phone services, support etc, then sell below cost.

I don't think there's much doubt that BoF customers were paying more for broadband services, especially when compared with current offerings, however, I haven't seen anything to support that this was due to WxC's pricing structure (as opposed to the wholesale pricing they had to work with). That pricing difference has certainly caused frustration, particularly with high use customers (vgamail would vouch for that). Additionally, at the time the pricing was originally set, I suspect it was far more competitive with other offerings, but wasn't revisted. There's obviously been significant change since then, with the separation of Telecom wholesale out as Chorus.

Has only ever elected Low speed (Voice only) option only has never elected for anything else even when new plans where offered with no contract, plans are comparable to the other offerings from other providers.

You're quite right, the new plans are certainly competitive, as well as providing the high level of customer service, technical support and high grade service that WxC pride themselves on [that sounds like a sales pitch, but it is supposed to be an impartial observation!]. I was referring more to the now historical situation with pricing.

As for vgamail's choice of plan, well, there's several threads here detailing various options and advice offered - given he's still a customer, I'd take that as a vote of confidence in the quality of product delivered!
