I have a project underway creating a public "Journal"

So the majority of access will i suspect come from NZ so it makes sense to host it here. We would also like the content to be available in the northern hemisphere.

Is this idea what they call a mirror site?

So end game, we create a wordpress site hosted here in NZ we mainatin and update and feed that site all the time there is a site in the north hemi exactly the same

Does that make sense?

Its just at present the site is at godaddy and sometimes when i go to work on it access is so slow. Thats not the expericnce we want our NZ clients to have

How much experience do you have with server management? If you feel comfortable using a Nix box one of the most cost effective ways to run it would be on the AWS cloud, which you could base in Sydney, generally it will offer good support to your NZ viewers, has the ability to instantly scale up, and easily provide elastic support in multiple locations. The best solution would be to use a RDS DB instance with an EC2 instance running PHP & Apache.

The best thing about this solution is that its free to get started. AWS offers a free tier for the first year.

You could just use Cloudflare as a frontend CDN. They now have a Sydney POP so you will hve some good experience with lots of the resources being cached closer.

The alternative is to host it where most of the users ar. What your analytics say? If it is NZ then move the server to NZ.

This is somewhat typical of off-shore hosted sites especially with a company that tends to have hundreds (sometimes thousands) of hosting accounts on a single server.

Cloudflare is a good option.

This is an area of interest for us (Full Flavour) as we're building a product similar to Cloudflare that allows us to host websites on NZ servers but we can deeply customise what caching & cdn services gets activated for non-New Zealand visitors.

Not enough

If you feel comfortable using a Nix box
Nix box= It is a computer running some variant of the UNIX operating system, such as one of the UNIX OSes, Linux, etc.

one of the most cost effective ways to run it would be on the AWS cloud
AWS Cloud=Amazon Web Services offers a complete set of infrastructure and application services that enable you to run virtually everything in the cloud: from enterprise applications and big data projects to social games and mobile apps.

, which you could base in Sydney, generally it will offer good support to your NZ viewers, has the ability to instantly scale up, and easily provide elastic support in multiple locations.

The best solution would be to use a RDS DB
RDS DB = Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) is a web service that makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while managing time-consuming database administration tasks, freeing you up to focus on your applications and business.

instance with an EC2
EC2 = Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud delivers scalable, pay-as-you-go compute capacity in the cloud.

instance running PHP & Apache.

The best thing about this solution is that its free to get started. AWS offers a free tier for the first year.

Ok that helped me understand getting and reading through all the definitions
But what i think this solution is for is to do with capacity?
Whereas in the future I trust this will be necessary at this stage I ned to create a good solid website that doesn't take ages to load in both locations.

Are you saying that although this is for capacity it will also remove the terrible lag one gets at sometimes form servers based in the states?

I should also mention that as this stage the project is not funded other than my time

+1 for CloudFlare.  It's simple to set up and it seems to work really well.  The only downside is that the closest POP is in Australia, but that's not such a big deal in most cases.

freitasm: At 40ms from Australia it will be better than 150ms from the USA for most cases. The really best thing would be hosting where most of your users are.

With Cloudflare, you can still access the local copy via a specific URL (say on an Auckland-based server) so response time using Wordpress would be super fast for editing. FTP updates would be super quick too.

Ok so I setup the cloudflare

Was very straightforward
now we will wait a couple of hours for the dns records to do there thing (I am sure there is a technical word for it)
and then see if that makes access faster although I may have to wait till tonight as it usually between 6 and 12 that the wheels fall off

will let you all know thanks for suggestions

So at this stage to summarise

I dont need to think about two sites as the aws cloud or the cloudflare will allow "acceptable"  access to the site whether you are in new york london or auckland?

A possible answer is to host the site in australia even though its expected that the majority of the users will be in NZ?

Wouldnt it make better sense to site in aust ? sort of halfway between (LOL if you dont do the maths)

I cant speak for cloudflare, I know very little about it.  I would assume though that it does not cache the DB of which is an integral part of wordpress,  Maybe freitasm could comment on this.

As far as picking Australia as a server base, in my answer the reason I suggested Sydney was because it is the closes AWS data center to NZ.  Like others have said, if you have the budget then serve content from the location closest to your customers NZ.  There are some distinct benefits to AWS, however if you dont have the expertise/dont want to learn them, AWS is not for you.  There are certainly easier hosting options.

Cloudflare is a reverse proxy. It will automatically add some smarts to make things even faster. The best thing is that it's a CDN that goes all over the world so whenever a new post goes up the first it's accessed things will be cached and delivered a lot faster to subsequent users.

For editing you can still use the direct domain name created. It means in general YOUR customers will have a better experience. You still have to access the original server in the USA for edits, new posts etc. though

As I said if your majority of readers are in NZ then host in NZ.

Don't worry about yourself. I know you currently feel bad with the response time, so imagine your customers/users! But again, think about them, not about you. If you host in NZ then both you and your customers win.

Geekzone is hosted in New Zealand but we also use Cloudflare. So you have an idea of how fast it is...

If you want some work done on a consulting basis I am happy to help with this.

Ok hosting in New Zealand it is.

I just have to resolove being spoilt by godaddy prices

still i suppose yet again start of small and grow

I gave up with spacemonkey not a good sign when they never answer any emails.

so does anyone know of a NZ hosting that does unlimited everything for less than $10 a month NZ like godaddy does?

gnfb1234:

The slowness is unlikely to be it's location. I host several wordpress websites in the US, and the speed is fine. It is likely to be the quality of hosting you are using. Some hosts are very poor with wordpress, as many oversell, so you have thousands of websites on just a single server. So you could have the same problem if you host it here in NZ if you choose a poor host.
