Hi all,
I'm currently on Telecom broadband and use my broadband connection mostly for gaming. I live in Hataitai, Wellington and TelstraClear isn't available where I currently live. I've had heaps of issues with Telecom and my DSL quality has been steadily decreasing. Web browsing, email and file downloads are fine but in gaming the latency is appalling. Ping times are bad but playable (about 400-600ms pings to the Guild Wars servers in West Coast US) but the worst part is intermittent disconnects and bursty behaviour.

The reason I'm posting is that I'm moving to Petone, Lower Hutt and I'm wondering if I should keep Telecoms 10GB max/128 Adventure plan or switch to to TelstraClears 10GB 4Mb/2Mb plan.

-I got the impression TelstraClear had micro-disconnect problems. Is that still a problem? (if it ever was)
-Which is likely to have better ping times?
-Which is likely to be a more reliable (i.e non-bursty) connection
-Can either be optimised for gaming? e.g turn off interleaving? get plans specific to gaming?

Help would be appreciated as I don't have any gaming frinds on TelstraClear in my area so I have no idea what it would be like. I don't want to go from bad to worse if I can help it.

Um, no replies? Well I've ordered TelstraClear so hopefully it will be ok. Will post an update when I get it.

There would be very few (if any) people on here who would recommend a NZ ADSL connection over TCL cable - it's superior in virtually every respect. TCL have had issues with outages but as of the end of 2006 when network upgrades have occured things have been very stable.

Hi there.

I'm on Telstraclear cable and it is by far the best broadband for online gaming.  I get sub 25 pings on NZ based servers and around 50-60 on most Oz servers.  I play a lot of Counter-Strike Source and myself and the other Telstraclear cable gamers always have the lowest pings much to the disgust of the Xtra users!
