brickviking: Um, you guys are throwing around all sorts of abbreviations that I'm not aware of yet, like RSC, ZRC, TSC and many others. I'm on Slingshot gear because it does indeed give me a ten dollar break. Another ten dollars isn't exactly easy for me to come up with on a monthly basis given the amount I'm paying. Internet's practically all I do aside from looking after the good wife. And no, let's just keep the topic to what I originally posted, my reconnection to BUR/AD. If I need to pay it, I need to pay it, but I'd really rather not.

Put simply, I was paying ten dollar less, and getting my DSL from BUR/S (and presumably my voice from BUR exchange), what difference does another 400m make? Ten dollars for 400 metres? That's worse than a taxi!

The simple reality of your situation is that there are things only your ISP can answer. We can explain why your connection is bad, but we can't fix it.

If you were on a cabinet before you need to be asking Slingshot why you're now on ULL gear from the exchange and why they're wanting $10 extra to move you back to a wholesale connection from the cabinet. Nobody here can answer that.

At the end of the day you're never going to get a satisfactory connection on ULL gear via a cabinet. Your problem can only be fixed by being served from the cabinet.

If Slingshot aren't willing to be of help I'd suggest moving to a new ISP.

As per our previous post, there is a solution being built to resolve this issue.

Broadband for the OP should be restored by connecting to the ISAM in the nearest cabinet in the next couple of days.

The $10 is to do with whether voice delivered over resold wholesale homeline or their own MSAN equipment back at the exchange, nothing to do with broadband component.

There's a problem for us with going naked. We have a monitored alarm and it's not one of the fancy new wireless ones nor a network alarm, so that isn't going to work too well. Then there'd be the cost of the VoIP phone and plan on top of that. I've no idea if they can still do my voice through Burwood Exchange as well as doing DSL through BUR/AD. I guess I'll find out.

ahh ok, well if you were fine using bur/s, then i imagine you'll be fine using bur/ad as both would go back to bur exchange where slingshot appear to have gear.

as a short term improvement you may be able to get slingshot to reduce your snr margin so it isn't quite as painful.  (probably good for a few hundred kilobit ore more)

Contact Brian at AlarmNZ about the alarm problem.  They have a nice little box that fixes that problem.

I paid for my box three times over from the savings I made by having them monitor my alarm.

2Talk do a local number with 1000 minutes for $11.50 and you can now get a single line ATA for less than $80.

We're all going to have to go naked eventually, may as well get on with it.

Now that you've mentioned you have a POTS line through Slingshot and not a naked connection the reasons why this scenario exists now seems very clear. I didn't pick up the mention of an alarm in the first post.

Slingshot can deliver Voice from the exchange and then use a port out of the cabinet. They just choose not to because it will cost them more.

Isn't unbundling awesome!!!

If you read back you'll see this cabinet uses VMUX gear so UCLF presumably isn't an option. This is presumably what the issue is here, and the solution is to move back to wholesale voice which is presumably what the extra $10 cost would be for.

If Chorus say they're working on a solution we'll just have to wait and see what they are planning.

I agree that we should wait to see what Chorus is going to deliver, but at the same time the general discussion around the issues is very interesting.

This whole space seems to need a sanity check.  What's it costing just to figure out what service you can give a customer?

That doesn't make sense to me.

What does it cost the RSPs to have systems to track all this stuff.
