Does anybody know how to set this up properly, or can refer me to good guide on how to do it?

I've set up the WRT54GL with Firmware Version: v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c.

I had a go at setting up the Qos but it didn't seem to make difference to my actual web surfing speed. I ran speed tests with utorrent running (and without of course) and they would take ages to start, then slowly increase in speed until it just hit a resonable speed at the end of the test. So effectively surfing the web while torrenting was really slow, even though QoS was supposedly running, well enough to give me a good speed test score anyway.

I'm guessing this is to do with latency, and I wonder if I need to compensate for Woosh's latency with some setting in my router's QoS setup.

BTW I'm not using VOIP, I just want to use QoS to lower utorrents priority so I can surf the web at the same time.

upstream bandwidth : manual 30kbps (i could probably bump this up a bit - i generally get about 60-70 on speedtests with nothing else running)

prioritize ack : checked

high : flatmates laptop : (mac address)
medium: www : ports 80-81, 443-443

Are you using ADSL or Wireless? I'm using ADSL -> WRT54G with DD-WRT v23 SP2. It doesn't seem to be a lot faster by turning on Qos because Woosh shapes P2P anyway.

wireless. i assumed that was implied since i mentioned the latency.

on the speed test when its the only thing running, it pretyy much goes to it's fastest speed right at the beginning of the test, and stays there. but with utorrent + QoS the speed test starts slow and stays slow right up until the end, then it gives me a good score anyway. so obviously the QoS is working, just not well enough to make a noticeable difference to web surfing speed.

is there a way to set a smaller packet size or something to compensate for the wireless latency? or is my understanding of the whole thing ompletely wrong?

As I understand QoS, for it to be effective it has to be done on the sending side of the connection, which means if you enable QoS on your router, you're able to prioritise outgoing traffic but you still have no effective control over incoming traffic. Web surfing is predominately receiving traffic, and so is half the torrent.

Your router can't do much with the traffic it receives beacuse it only sees data after it's come down your connection. QoS is shaping traffic as it goes into a bottleneck.

When you use your router to set QoS on incoming traffic you're setting the priorities it uses to push the traffic from your router to your network clients via your own LAN - and because your LAN is faster than your broadband, it has no effect.

This is why QoS is beneficial for VoIP as VoIP is two way data and most people's broadband is upload-constrained, so QoS makes sure that outgoing voice traffic has priority on the 128k squeeze out. Again, this doesn't change incoming data unless the ISP itself is upping the priority of the VoIP (or in your case, downgrading the priority of bittorrents). It's only on Go Large style plans that they do that.
