With Google Mail (and gmail) you can do things like name+geekzone@yourdomain.com - That is a way to be able to filter for email coming through on that address. You can also set up aliases and groups to forward emails and use that to filter.

So you can use your "best" address with a little extra thought and still give it to people you don't trust to not forward it to spammers.

Let's say you need to sign up for a mailing list that interests you, but you're afraid spammers might get your address. We'll call the list "exoticflowers". Sign up with the list using the address "johndoe+exoticflowers@gmail.com". Email to that address will still come to your "johndoe@gmail.com" address even though the "To:" will include that "+exoticflowers" in it.

Bung:
qyiet: Can we all just agree that we need to pity those with xtra addresses.

No disrespect to present company but who uses their "best" address registering on forums?

I don't, I use my throw away xtra address for signing up most websites. VF number are low, considering they are one of the largest ISPs in NZ.

well ihug and paradise and clear had their own ip addresses.  i never seee vodafone email addresses around myself.  but i do see clear.net.nz, paradise.net.nz, .. dont' really see ihug any more.

i think it helps that clear and paradise had early ip address and solid networks, so a lot of people have had their email addresses for 10+ years and so aren't in such a rush to shift it.

i'm using personal email, but i've been using the same email for over 10 years, and yet i haven't had a static phone number for as long.

Only family, close friends and key colleagues get my primary email address, and I never use it to sign up for forums and websites etc.

As a consequence, I keep traffic on my core mailbox (which I check daily) low: 15-20 messages a week, all relevant, and I don't have to wade through a lot of dross which isn't time critical. Which is kind of nice when checking from my phone etc.

The two email addresses I use for websites/forums, one for forums I am confident are bona fide (including this one), and one that I use when for other websites that insist I register to get/read something but which I may never return to again, are both still real. They just only get checked once or twice a month and the (mostly spam) responses scrubbed - esp on the second address.

I have 1 primary address (@hotmail.com) and 4 aliases (1 @outlook.co.nz, live.com ( live.com is my best/favourite that I rarely give out to anyone). Also have a custom domain hosted on outlook.com which is free. The +newsletter alias style functionality is available on Oulook.com but I do not use it. Instead I use my @hotmail.com address for 99% of the websites. I do not signup to rogue websites in the first place. In case, I do start getting annoying newsletter from anyone, I use the sweep feature in Outlook.com to block it for good or only keep the latest message from that sender that is available. Works really well for me.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Is @geekzonemail.com addresses bundled into Hotmail or outlook? Or is not many people using?

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
