Hi all,

After 3 long years and lots of whinging Chorus have found the broken section and fixed my internet - from 1-3 mb down 350kb up to now on 12mb down 1mb up laughing

As is the case with most geeks I'm always looking to the next best thing, UFB is a few years away for us so I was hoping I might be able to get VDSL. I'm not cabinetised, we are connected directly to the Johnsonville exchange which I'm told should have VDSL capability (this is from a mate so not sure on how reliable the info is).

The pre-qual site for Telecom says not available, is there a way to get a manual / actual pre-qual done to determine if my line will support VDSL?

TIA

Yep.. But I would just check the Chorus Maps... As they show if you can get VDSL (> 20Mbps Broadband zone) in dark red.

At 12mb.. I doubt it.

Thanks, I'm showing as in the >10mb zone not >20mb so out of luck I guess? I'm not at home so can't pull the line stats..

Interestingly a few friends have moved from adsl in wellington and they were around 12-14mb previously and have solid vdsl speeds.

Master Filter / Splitter would have made the world of difference to them.

I can run a line test if you message me or email me "pl at telecom.co.nz" with your home phone number. But I don't hold out a lot of hope.

Thanks, email sent I won't hold my breath but good to rule it in or out...

Maybe time to sell up and look for a house with UFB... smile

Sorry… You are exchange connected so no VDSL for you.

On the upside UFB is coming next year, so June 2015-June 2016 sometime in that time you can get UFB if things keep on the way they are supposed to.

Which is better than me, who lives in Miramar, is exchange connected yet has no UFB on the horizon.

Great thanks for checking it out, I had thought the exchanges would have vdsl equipment but I guess with the fibre rollout they aren't deploying much new stuff..

UFB a year away hmm we may still be in this house, I'll be gutted if it shows up just as we move!

many do, but because the exchange covers a bigger area than a cabinet does, lots of people on exchanges can't get VDSL because they are too far from the exchange, but not far enough to be on a cabinet.

Have a look at the chorus maps tool for auckland.

Your exchange does have VDSL.. but you are about 1.4km away.. You need to be less than 800 meters from the exchange to get VDSL as that's the point that there isn't speed improvement on VDSL and in fact you start causing problems for other ADSL folks on the same bundle as you.
