I'm on Telecom VDSL and I used to get rock solid, consistent, download speeds of 29mbs but I see it has now dropped down to 25mbs.  I'm still perfectly happy with the service - pings are the same and excellent, uploads speeds have remained the same (9.5) and I have a great internet experience but I'm just curious:  what would cause download speeds to drop after months of being at the same speed?  Could it be case of more people joining VDSL in my street? 


I live in Porirua.  Am one street away from UFB which is coming to my street shortly (can't wait, so excited, as in its the last thing I think about before going to sleep) and will get it just as soon as it does.  OMG those new Chorus wholesale plans have just come in at the right time.

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

 


 

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

 


 

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

 



 

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

You can simply join the 20 or so other threads about VDSL2 speeds that have appeared in the last month or so complaining of slowing VDSL2.

One would assume your sync speeds have reduced, which like pretty much every other thread is simply an effect of crosstalk.

Fair comment.  I'll google "crosstalk".

Edit: done, thanks for the hint. I'll blame it on crosstalk.

So is that why mine has dropped by 7Mbps over the past week ? :)
Was getting 40/10, now getting 33/10.....  feel ripped :-p Nah, Im still happy, 33 is a lot better than the 13 was getting before ;)

In saying that John, is there a threshold where the ISP can/has to stop connecting customers to VDSL, so those paying more for VDSL speed dont end up back at ADSL download speeds ? Or would the ISP just counter with "but your upload is VDSL speed still" ? :)

my 60/10 has dropped down to 57/10... i feel robbed.


since i used to be on a 3mbit line, that loss of over 3mbit is huge!


anyone wanna give it back to me? ;)

the line used to be very clear cut.


since the big isps have jumped onboard though, it would seem things have gotten way more relaxed however...

Over the weekend, I've had a 2db increase in downstream attenuation, which has equated to my 35mbps down, becoming 24.5mbps. The other VDSL connection in the house is unchanged. If its crosstalk, then I've certainly drawn the short-straw on this one.
