I was quoted $580 by Spark to connect a new line from the pole to a new dwelling. There is cabling already buried between the house and pole, they just need to connect both ends. Is that about normal price wise? It seems high to me but I don't know what exactly needs to be done. Are there cheaper ways to do this or am I kind of screwed in terms of options? Vector was worse haha!

Would you get a free install, without connection fee, if you went straight to fibre, or do you still need an existing phone number?

Hi, was this just an over the phone quote, or did a tech visit and evaluate the situation. If its the former, then its a bulls!t number. You need to ask for a site visit.

Thanks for your replies, I should have said this relates to a question I posted on the BigPipe forum.

I don't want to connect to anyone yet for broadband and because I am considering BigPipe I was hoping to get the line installed anyway and earlier than needed as BigPipe don't do installs, so I had ruled out signing up to any ISP yet (I actually want to keep my options open right until I need to choose).

We are out of town, so semi rural (Spark had my address when they quoted it). A tech has never been out to the site so I guess that answers my question really, I need to pay for a site visit. I assume I just go through Spark for this?

Thats the cost of a new install for ruralish areas when I last asked for a friend to get a line to their place in the whops which they wanted because they are old and feel they needed one. Once we got that quote they quickly stopped insisting that their sleep-out sized batch needed a phone and are quite happy to use their mobiles.

A lot of other telcos cant even be bothered trying to arrange a new installation to a property that has never had a line installed before.

That sounds like the price of a high cost rural connection. Are you rural?

Even if there is cabling in place, if there isn't an intact connection at the address that is simply the cost of a new connection. Yes it is a crock but that's just how it is. However, if Chorus turn up and fimd the line is an intact and this is simply just a mistaken address then they will charge a standard connection fee.

sounds like a low density first time connection, site visit will only add to costs overall
