Talkiet:
plambrechtsen: And here is the problem with TCP and long ping times. Without tweaking of your TCP stack or multiple threads you will never get fast speeds to the other side of the world.

If you really wanted a good speed test you should use UDP and measure how much data is dropped or what is the maximum speed it can arrive at.

I doubt you will see anything faster than 15mb ever to the UK or NL. It's just how TCP works on long round trips.

Except speedtest.net (and possibly other speedtests) fudge their tests and estimate line speeds. It's only partially related to the actual traffic they exchange as part of the test. And they use multiple threads, and they use a non centrally tended subset of results and then they add a fudge factor for 'overheads'

It's a miracle that speedtest.net results ever match expectations.

Cheers - N

I think it'll get quite interesting when people start to adopt the QUIC protocol. It's taken a while for SPDY to gain some traction, however I'm noticing some sites and a few CDNs are supporting that.

Great, so I sifted through the HTTP logs of the server to get your IP-addresses, matched them to the respective ISP's and did some ping and traceroute tests

Out of the results I compiled the following report;
Please note that these are based on my own measurements and interpretation and should not be seen as a fixed ranking.
Nothing is as changeable as IT technology and with the flick of a button on a router the below results could be turned upside down.

BigPipe:
Overall ranking #1
Bandwidth test #2 (8.51mbit) -> Impressive!
International hops #1 (1 hop via Level 3, San Jose CA) -> Impressive!
US ping (low/avg/high): 136/148/161 (ranked #3)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 321/321/321 (ranked #8)
AP ping (low/avg/high): 25/40/55 (ranked #7)
My server (low/avg/high): 291/293/297 (ranked #3)
High bandwidth, low hops, average ping.

Orcon:
Overall ranking #2
Bandwidth test #4 (6.76mbit)
International hops #6 (3 hops via HE, London, New York NY, San Jose CA)
US ping (low/avg/high): 131/149/167 (ranked #6)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 272/272/272 (ranked #1) -> Impressive!
AP ping (low/avg/high): 24/25/25 (ranked #1)
My server (low/avg/high): 280/284/294 (ranked #1) -> Impressive!
Medium bandwidth, average hops, low ping.

MyRepublic:
Overall ranking #3
Bandwidth test #1 (8.63mbit) -> Impressive!
International hops #7 (4 hops via HE, Paris, Ashburn VA, Palo Alto CA, San Jose CA)
US ping (low/avg/high): 127/133/138 (ranked #2)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 272/291/309 (ranked #4)
AP ping (low/avg/high): 34/35/36 (ranked #6)
My server (low/avg/high): 289/305/306 (ranked #5)
High bandwidth, average hops, average ping.

Spark:
Overall ranking #4
Bandwidth test #6 (6.16mbit)
International hops #2 (1 hop via Level3, San Jose CA or Los Angeles CA) -> Impressive!
US ping (low/avg/high): 131/148/166 (ranked #5)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 299/319/339 (ranked #6)
AP ping (low/avg/high): 25/34/43 (ranked #5)
My server (low/avg/high): 319/321/323 (ranked #6)
Medium bandwidth, low hops, average ping.

Vodafone:
Overall ranking #5
Bandwidth test #3 (7mbit)
International hops #4 (2 hops via Telstra. London, Hong Kong)
US ping (low/avg/high): 169/171/173 (ranked #8)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 281/289/297 (ranked #3)
AP ping (low/avg/high): 157/177/198 (ranked #8)
My server (low/avg/high): 303/326/334 (ranked #7)
High bandwidth, low hops, average ping.

Mynxnet:
Overall ranking #6
Bandwidth test #8 (4.62mbit)
International hops #3 (1 hop via NTT, San Jose CA)
US ping (low/avg/high): 131/131/131 (ranked #1)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 321/321/321 (ranked #7)
AP ping (low/avg/high): 25/25/25 (ranked #2)
My server (low/avg/high): 293/293/299 (ranked #2)
Poor bandwidth, low hops, average ping.

Snap:
Overall ranking #7
Bandwidth test #7 (5.67mbit)
International hops #5 (2 hops via NTT, Ashburn VA, Los Angeles CA)
US ping (low/avg/high): 131/149/166 (ranked #4)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 297/306/316 (ranked #5)
AP ping (low/avg/high): 28/33/37 (ranked #4)
My server (low/avg/high): 299/303/315 (ranked #4)
Average bandwidth, low hops, average ping.

Thrustpower:
Overall ranking #8
Bandwidth test #5 (6.38mbit)
International hops #8 (9 hops via CogentCo, LON-PAR-ORD-LPL-SFO-YYZ-ATL-LAX-SYD)
US ping (low/avg/high): 138/152/166 (ranked #7)
EU ping (low/avg/high): 282/285/287 (ranked #2)
AP ping (low/avg/high): 28/29/29 (ranked #3)
My server (low/avg/high): 319/333/356 (ranked #8)
Medium bandwidth, high hops, high ping.

Orcon has very low ping times however is closely followed by the smaller independent UFB ISP's (BigPipe, MyRepublic, Mynxnet).
The throughput of Orcon is a lot lower than the smaller ISP's though.
Snap is pretty good on ping but has a much lower bandwidth throughput on average

Vodafone and Spark are pretty average on all ends

Thrustpower has absolutely shocking routing, I couldn't believe the trace route report after running it, it goes all over the shop! This also converts into the worst pings out of the test.

So far it seems that BigPipe and MyRepublic come closest to what I am looking for.
