Hi,
Just got my new DrayTek Vigor 130/Asus RT-AC87U combo working and well the sync speed is a little disappointing so master filter time.

Synced at 10597 Kbps down, 863 Kbps up
With attenuation 20dB down, 9 dB up

House in 20+ mbps zone, 400m by road to exchange. VDSL is no go as Spark report 11 dB attenuation with max limit 10 dB.

Is there anyone who installs master filters in Dunedin? Or should I just request one through Spark (for $199 I think?).

Cheers.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

same deal here
chorus said we couldn't and then they could

5 other provides said we could too

push for it and make them come down and refer to other isps and actually quote it to spark if they can

or have a nice chat to cbrpilot and he maybe able to push

Snap/Vodafone said above above 10dB so no. Spark said you have 11.0dB attenuation and it must be under 9 dB (I don't know where they got 9 from I'm pretty sure its 10.8). The reasoning is the other houses aren't eligible either so therefore it must be down to how the network is and 'no work on copper is going to be done' to improve it. Also 'Chorus will reject any order over 9 dB' including 9.1 dB.

Other then having the master filter installed or requesting a chorus tech to come around I don't know what I can do. Everyone just seems very solid it's a no and leaves no room for even any discussion about it.

maybe it's their easy way out to force people onto fibre ... thing is ... not everyone can get fibre

attenuation of 11 has not been a major problem in some areas ... not sure why they pick on you :D

(yes connecting people with lousy attenuation does degrade the service but they haven't defended this parameter ... until now??)
