Jaxar: Seriously the company makes multiplayer computer games you would think he would have a clue about sorting this out before deciding on a location.

There are far too many IT/developer types who don't really understand networks. So he should have a clue but like most people probably doesn't.

I suspect he was frustrated at lack of UFB at the locations he wanted and made some throwaway comments on Twitter about it.

Unfortunately when you have lots of followers it gets blown up.

There are far more constructive ways of approaching the issue. Fame makes a lot of people into asses.

Sounds like people are being a bit negative about this guy, I played the game DayZ for a few hours. It will certainly be a loss to NZ economy if this guy plus others get frustrated and leave NZ because of a slow internet.

I understand some frustration getting connected to UFB. My install is stalled because a snake could not be pushed all the way through existing duct, and now need neighbours consents to dig a small hole in right of way.

Has been weeks and could be many more.

Sounds like rubbish to me. I spend my entire day working on complex provisionig issues for Sparl Digital corporate UFB customers. I am personally overseeing at least 100 of these throughout the country right now, and I have only one solitary order where a financial contribution has been requested from the end customer - every other job is being subsidised in full by the Crown/LFC partnership, so his cost argument is at best misinformed, at worst totally false.

He clearly does not understand the process at all - maybe his service provider never set a realistic expectation regarding difficulty and timeframe. It happens.... a lot.

Clearly most of you were not at the Mikrotik MUM on Monday where one ISP gave a detailed presentation of issues in Dunedin around UFB.

It comes to me as no surprise that this guy has just hit the 'red button' after what I listened to from this ISP owner on Monday.

It's no secret that there some shocking communication going on in Dunedin that's just causing endless end user frustration.

I like the way the all of the comparisons done for internet speed are for downloads, yet, when creating content, or using cloud services it is often the upload speed that is important. 10Mbs upload is quite a bit different from 100Mbs download.

Yeah, but as its a business I would have thought they wouldnt be going on UFB anyway and getting a business grade connection which are provisioned separately from the UFB us peasants use. (or would. If chourus hadnt stopped installing it 500m away down a peninsula.)

I reckon our internet is great, UFB is being rolled out to 75% of the population. THis is pretty good.

I don't know what this guy is on about as our speeds will be world class.

And, he is based in dunedin which is even better with 2gbps speeds.

Why is UFB required here? There is perfectly good Chorus HSNS (Bitstream 4) fibre available at most commercial premises. Sure its $1200ish a month (100/100) but gives contracted SLA, Uptime, and performance. Not to mention the small $4m saving by not moving.

Given there scale I would think UFB would be be the last thing they would want.

I guess these are the type of things there ISP would approach them about, quite shocking that "mission critical" discussion never happened.

Whatever, the thing is this has got more people on about the awefully slow rollout of UFB here. That IMO is a good thing. Its as if chorus were told by crown fiber that they have until 2019 to do it, so they are intentionally doing it as slow as possible inorder to maximize how much they can make off their decrepid copper network.

Chorus are contracted to have there part of the network completed by 2020. And as far as I am aware it is completely on schedule.
