Just received, information about the New Zealand National Broadband map website:

Communications Minister Amy Adams today launched a new online map that will allow New Zealanders to source the best broadband options available to them at their home or business.

“Access to fast speed internet is a critical enabler for the economy. Kiwis are now looking to have access to information anywhere, anytime and anyhow,” Ms Adams says.

“Our UFB and RBI programmes are charging ahead and this map gives New Zealanders a one-stop shop where they can go to find out what services are available to them at their address and how they can connect.”

Ms Adams said the map would also display when ultra- fast broadband or rural broadband coverage would be going to a particular area. A connection into each premise can then be requested from a Retail Service Provider.

The broadband map has been provided by the NZRS Ltd, the service delivery subsidiary of InternetNZ.

“NZRS Ltd has worked closely with service providers around the country to source the most comprehensive data set of broadband coverage in New Zealand.

“They’ve also committed to keeping the data on the broadband map current and are continuing to work with network operators to close any information gaps that still exist,” Ms Adams says.

its nice and all but it just doesn't seem like its finished

i constantly have the loading circles on the middle of the screen
There is no display of the actual speed at the location of the pin, the speeds page seems to indicate there should be something displayed, maybe related to the above loading circles issue.
the 2 bars, one at the top and one at the bottom make the page very wide and its not the easiest to view

We have 200/200 for over 3 months now and the maps still say that our MDU is still 'planned'. Not sure what was different/wrong before this website existed. IMHO it is just another waste of dollars spent at the MBIE

I get the loading circle thing too, I keep thinking it hasn't finished loading the page, but it looks like it has?

the site seems incredibly slow to actually process anything.. the circles eventually go away though.

The fact that it shows compasses coverage too is nice.

Their chorus data seems out of date, i haven't dug around too much to see if its an isolated case, but the WAK/C and WAK/B cabinets are definitely missing shape maps there.

Interesting to see they advertise speeds for 998 VDSL already too, although its still a "i can get that", realistically... kinda worse than chorus's Simplified maps...

Took ages to load the info for an address, but eventually worked.

On this page: https://broadbandmap.nz/technologies

Fibre is the core technology used in the Government funded Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) initiative, which is expected to connect all homes and business by 2019.

Wow, all homes and businesses, huh? You'd think they'd be able to get the basics right...

turns out ABP doesnt like the speeds display

Also VDSL is displayed as 15-60mbps down and 5-18 up when IMO it should be listed as 15-70 down and 1-10 up

15-60/5-18 is a good estimate, cutting off the Maximum rate there for 998, but for 997 Yeah, its not the best.

No RBI Wireless info.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

I can find residential addresses in Auckland on it which aren't supposed to have UFB yet which apparently have it. :/
How does one accomplish this with Chorus?

Hi

Some answer/responses for you.

  1. Yes we had a lot of performance issues.  These are now all fixed.  Sorry about that.
  2. MBIE didn't spend any money on this, only we did.
  3. Some of the data may not be as up to date as that the providers have themselves and in a few cases we haven't had a chance to update the site with the new data we have received.  That should be fixed in the next week or so.
  4. Thanks for spotting the error on the /technologies page, we'll fix that.
  5. We can only display the data that has been provided to us and RBI Wireless wasn't supplied in time for the launch.  However we now have it and expect to have it up soon.

Thanks for letting us know about all these.

cheers
Jay

Jay, are Spark and Vodafone playing ball? Will we be getting data on Spark's rural 4G and Vodafone's cable?

Also you might want to update the "Cellular (3G/4G)" blurb on the technology page to include RBI/Spark Rural.

If only the maps saying I could get VDSL meant I could get VDSL

Vodafone have now supplied us data yes on RBI and cable, but unfortunately not in time for the launch.  We will update the text on cellular.

Change the description for ADSL. As an upload speed of 1-2Mbit is unrealistic for almost all ADSL connections. 0.5-1Mbit would be a better description.

The speeds come from the data providers.  In the case of Chorus ADSL the speeds do vary by cabinet and distance from cabinet.  As far as we can tell the speed ranges given for ADSL are fairly realistic.
