hi all.

i have a cayman 3546 router/switch and it indicates the folllowing:-

download stream = 3000, upload stream = 160

but's test shows:-

download =2346kbs, upload =129kbs

these data were recorded almost simultaneously.

would someone please explain the reasons for the difference, and what must i do, to get the higher speeds.

ps: i have a gigabyte 965p-ds3 m/b with 2g rams, and am with orcon's 5g fs/128 residing in howick, auckland.

If I recall correctly, the speed your router displays is the sync speed or something like that, and given network conditions, traffic, TCP/IP overhead, etc. you're not going to achieve that speed.

So basically, the speed that the speed test reports you as getting is correct, and that's around about what you would get if you were surfing the internet or downloading a file. The sync speed is exactly that - the speed the router syncs to the DSLAM or ADSL equipment in the cabinet or at the exchange.

Of course, I'm probably wrong, but it was worth a crack.

Those speeds are the full bit rate, i.e. how many 0s & 1s can be transmitted. The actual data rate is about 20% lower due to overheads, i.e. packet headers / error correction, etc etc. So yes your speeds are about right for your connection.

Take for example, your plan is FS/128, yet your upload sync is 160. However, your speed test shows 129 - what it should be, and this just happens to equate to about 80% of 160.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
