I *finally* got connected to UFB today and am able to ditch my ADSL model :)

 

I went with Voyager internet's Unlimited 100/20mb UFB package. I am very disappointed that I can barely get above 65 mb down (upload is about 21mb normally)

 

 

[ Router is DSL-2877AL (I supplied it), connected to ONT via. Gigabit port. I ran the tests connected via. ethernet. and shut down apps/other computers that might be consumer bandwidth. Speed has been more or consistent throughout the day. I am in Christchurch. ]

 

Is this normal? Not sure if I am right to be disappointed or if this is in the normal range.

It's not. You should get close to the headline speeds. Can you try unplugging the router and plug the computer directly into the ONT? You'll need to set VLAN and start a PPPoE dialer on your computer to connect.

My parents have voyager ufb in Whangarei, speedtest is 105/55 to auckland.

I dont know that model very well but some cheap routers cannot handle 100mbits through them.

Not sure if this is coincidence, but for some reason Voyager score badly with Google on the Video Quality Report - I noticed this in Tauranga and Christchurch recently.

Router admin loads fine when speedtesting. I am getting a gigabit Mikrotik router from work to try see if it makes a difference. 

 

Voyager responded and asked me to run a speedtest against the WorldNet server in Auckland ... same ~65mb result.

Guys, I switched to the Mikrotik router and am now getting much better speeds (93mb down, see screenshot below). Still quite a bit less than the advertised speeds which is a little disappointing from a geeky point of view (not so much from a practical point of view). The router CPU load is about 50% when running the speed test.

93Mbps is a fairly certain indicator of a 100Mbps FE capable device (as it's all you can do over 100Mbps Ethernet) or dodgy cable. What type of router are you using and how is it connected?

check if you are connected at 100mbps or 1gbps, try changing the cables as well as you may have a ISP supplied cable in there that is only 100mbps capable

Thanks for the tip. Switched to a brand new cat6 cable. Unfortunately same result. The router reports gigabit connections on all connected ports.

 

Will try a different computer and see if the result change.

I am using a Mikrotik RB951G-2HnD. It should easily handle routing far more than 100mb ethernet.

 

One  cat6 cable to the ONT to the router, one cat6 cable to my computer. Low CPU load on router during speed test.
