Jonski:
... which is still too expensive. A low-end dsl plan is about $40 a month, with a $45/month landline plan. So, what's stopping anyone dropping the landline and getting a dsl plan only for that same $40?

Because you are forgetting the costs associated with the line. With a landline, thats part of the monthly landline rental, with naked DSL that price is included in the broadband cost instead.

You have it all back to front jonski. The voice service actually subsidises the cost of the line but its lumped in together as a voice/line rental. Take off the voice service and the line costs have to become part of the ADSL fee instead of the voice fee. So you can see that it costs about $40 to maintain a copper pair out to your place with or without voice.

Wireless sounds more suitable for you anyway, especially with the budget.

Time to find a new industry!
