G'day,

I'm a gamer and moving to Rangiora...which of the Telco's has the best latency to the US gaming servers? Who has the latest hardwear down there?

Cheers

Have you got a specific address? Are you moving right into the township, or to one of the rural areas? Have you checked Chorus's address checker (or Enable, if you're looking at fibre)?

Yep I'm moving into the township. The reason I'm asking is my mate who has ASDL or VDSL has really bad internet and he is in town, I think his is the SPARK backbone. When I switch to VF up here in Auckland a few years ago, my ping time went down 20ms apparently because VF had newer switch gear or RED boxes?

So I'm wondering who has the latest gear in Rangiora and who has a lower ping to the US? Ping is what is important to me, not D/L speed

Your mate might have poor house wiring impacting the Internet connection and not actually an ISP issue

Whichever ISP you choose, they're still all using the same pipe across the Pacific ocean to the USA. Your ping time difference between ISPs would make no practical difference at all.

You are right in regards to the Pacific Pipe, but I'm interested in the local ISP connection and it does make a difference, at least it did 4 or 5 years ago when I switched from Xtra to VF...I wonder who could tell me which of the two main providers has a better result?

On another note: What is latency like with fibre? Better or worse than copper wire?

Cheers

better with fibre

but i doubt you would see much of a difference at all between any of the major players, except maybe my replublc, they always seems to have worse speed/ping than the other ISP's

Latency with Fibre's always going to be that bit better that copper.

Have you thought about 2Degrees? They have a CHCH Pop and have always had (ex Snap! days) a great backbone and provider blend.

I'm in Rangiora. Made the mistake of joining myrepublic on their 100/20 plan. Started off fine but speeds, particularly in peak hours, have dropped dramatically and nobody seems to be able to sort it. Cross them off your list.

Interestingly they still advertise for new customers like there's no tomorrow.

I second the cross MyRepublic off the list!

Pity their service doesn't match their advertising.

Hearing and reading some good things about Bigpipe. They say they have naked UFB available in Rangiora with no contract terms or ETF's. If you dont need a phone line, could be worth giving them a go
