So out of curiosity of upgrading our home phone lines, I took a look at our ETP that's outside the garage. Took it out and put it back in. Didnt dismantle it, or cut any wires or whatever, but after that the internet speed dropped to 1mbps (originally 8~9 mbps). We had this speed about 4 years ago, and after installing a master splitter/filter, the increased drastically. I am not entirely sure why the speed dropped back after looking at it, perhaps faulty or loose wires. So I decided to reconnect the wires(exactly the way it was before), bought new gel 2way/3way wire connectors, and reconnected it.




Now both phone and internet is faulty. Both of it doesnt seem to work. The master filter we had was a really old one that only has blue/white and orange/white.




I ve been reading the forums a lot on installing a new master splitter, and it seems like the colour code was incorrectly installed from the first place. I ve bought a new master filter (orange/white, green/white, blue/white) and tried installing it, but our home wires seems to be slightly different from the ones that was mentioned online for people who has had a similar problem.








Our ETP currently has 4 cables, 3 black, and 1 white.




1st Black cable is rolled up and not used,




2nd black cable consists pf 3 wires inside (yellow, brown ish, white),




3rd black  cable consists of 4 wires (Red,black,blue,white) Found the red/black rolled up and not used.




White cable consists of 6 wires (red,blue,green,black,white,orange)








So originally the technician installed the filter wiring like this:








The Blue/White wires from the splitter was joined to the Blue/white wires to the 3rd black cable mentioned. (Blue-Blue), (white-White).




[I read from posts that the Orange/white is connected to the line and not the blue/white, but this was how it was originally connected.]








The orange wire from the splitter was connected to the white wire from the White cable.




The White wire from the splitter was connected 3 way with the red wire from the white cable and to the yellow wire from the 2nd Black cable.








Blue -> Blue




White -> White








Orange -> White




White -> Red/Yellow to 2 different cable.








From reading different posts, I know some of the wiring contradicts how people connects the filter, I don’t understand why it was working fine for years before I pulled it out for inspection.




What my actual plan was to install a 3 way master splitter (green/white -> cat5e) and installing a CAT5e cable going into the garage so I can place my router there with cat5e wired straight to the router, rather than going through the phone lines as different phone jacks seems to give different speed.








If someone could help me with this matter it’d be great.

You say that different phone jacks give different speeds - this confirms the splitter is wired incorrectly. Unless the signal is exceptionally good to start with, you shouldn't get any sort of meaningful xDSL sync through the filter, which should be filtering all but one outlet. If the modem works in all outlets, then you don't have a dedicated modem outlet...


Next thing is to establish where those cables go to/from.


The four core black cable is likely 2 pairs to the nearest 049 pillar (blue/white and red/black). The line comes in on blue/white, and red/black is spare.


The white 6 core probably daisy chains around the house - pull off the nearest jack to the ETP and see if that cable shows.


If there is a dedicated modem jack (working or not), see what cable runs to that.


That 3 core black cable is unusual - especially given only one core used. Is it possible that on of the other cores has pulled free from a gel crimp?

The phone jack just comprises of white 6 core that you mentioned. the 3 Black core cables you mentioned, one of them are not used, the other 2, like i mentioned on the post, yellow cable was originally used from previous technition that installed the splitter in the first place, and the blue/white (red/black spare) was also used. are you saying that the yellow one shouldnt be used?




The yellow wire was connected in a 3 way connector with the White wire (from the orange splitter) and the red (from the 6 white core).

So how should it be connected? The one thing i really dont understand is, why is it causing trouble now?


It was working fine for years until i pulled it out, and put it back in. If the wiring has been wrong all these years, shouldnt it have been non funcitonal from the start??


The wiring is confusing to say the least cause our home cables seems to be slightly different from the rest.


Do i use 2 of the black core cables (which was originally connected) or do I use the one?

No, I'm saying it is unusual to use only one core in a multi core cable, so if you knew where that went to, it would help.


Does that what cable appear at every jackpoint - if so, what colours are used?


Is there a dedicated modem jack (functional or not)? If so, what cable is connect to it?

I expect the white core from the 3 core white/yellow/brown may have originally been 3 way connected with the white from the white/orange on the filter.

I just checked 3 of the phone jacks where 2 of them were functional with the router the other with the phone.


2 of the phone jacks which was dedicated to the router has the White and Red wire connected from the white core line).


The other one that was used for the phone line has orange and white connected.

Originally the 3 way gel crimp had teh yellow (from black cable), Red (from white cable), and White (from the orange/white splitter wire)

i think i found out the missing piece. There is another black cable uried hidden in one of the black core cables which was the (yellow,brown,white) I didnt see it before, but it was 3 way connected to the orange/white/black wires. I think i can safely draw a conclusion on which wires to connect now. i'll do some trial and error and see how it works.

Internet and phone is functioning as normal. It turns out while i took the master splitter out, one of the wires (black) was snapped off, and didnt realise it as it was buried under the core wire so couldnt see.


Currently its connected as:


Orange (splitter) -> Blue (Black core cable)
Orange/white (splitter) -> White (Black core cable)

Blue (splitter) -> Black (Black core cable) + White (White core cable)
Blue/White (splitter) -> Yellow (Black core cable) + Red (White core cable)

Green (splitter) -> vacant
Green/white (splitter) -> vacant




I am not using the Green, Green/white from the splitter. Although I want to install a cat5e cable (whole purpose of this), how would i be able to connect the green wires so they function/transmit data to the cat5e calbe once connected?


I tried connecting the the green -> green, green/white -> green/white from splitter to a 5m cat5e to test if it works, and connected directly to the router, but didn't get any dsl connection.

I suspect your lead-in is the black cable with black/yellow + white/brown - i.e. the cable that had black broken. The newer black cable with blue/white & red/black is probably just another feed to internal jack-points, along with the white cable. so with that in mind:


Orange (splitter) -> yellow (on black cable)
Orange/white (splitter) -> black (on black cable)


Green (splitter) -> via your CAT5e to xDSL socket
Green/white (splitter) -> via your CAT5e to xDSL socket


Blue (splitter) -> blue (on newer black cable)
Blue/white (splitter) -> white (on newer black cable)




How many jack-points do you have around the house?


Can you find the other end of the newer black cable? (i.e. one of your jack-points somewhere). You could possibly use the red/black pair in this for the xDSL jack-point.

We have 6 jack points in the house. 3 downstairs, and 3 upstairs. From What i've seen when I opened it yesterday, it was all the white cable connected with different colour wiring for each. Some red/white, orange/white, orange/black, and of them used 2 white cables connecting to the socket using 2 red's and 2 white's.


None of it was connected to the newer black cable you mentioned. I am not sure if the TV aerial counts as a jack. We got a few of those too.


Mind if you ask, what would be the difference if I connected it with the newer black cable opposed to the white cable originally?




And according to what you've written down, it means I ve done the wiring incorrectly. I'll have to change it today and see how that goes. You let you know.
