Wellington City Council is planning some major roadworks on the main thoroughfare of our suburb (Island Bay, to address the... somewhat contentious... cycleway there). Having seen many local roads dug up again and again in quick succession, I am impressed at the thoroughly sensible decision to roll up the roadworks with UFB deployment and other infrastructure works and do it all at once:

Now, if only they could bring forward my expected UFB availability date from December 2019! #wishfulthinking

The Island Bay Residents' Association is still fighting the council's proposed solution to the situation on The Parade, so the council probably won't be able to go ahead with the work as soon as they think anyway.

I can't say too much more than that on a public forum, but if you live in Island Bay then you are welcome to come to the next residents' association meeting which will probably be in April.

Is that cycleway being fought on the OSH front as well?

I was speaking with a random person recently who said there's often 4 wheel drive vehicles parked around where she lives. These apparently block her view of the cycle lane and she's quite method that one she'll turn into her driveway and collect a cyclist. She also said she'd copped abuse from a couple of cyclists over some near misses.

Obviously I can't judge the truth of these claims but they're certainly not outlandish.

"The council aims to start construction on the redesign later this year and expects it could be completed by mid-2019. However, it has yet to make decisions on civil works that could delay construction.

The Island Bay UFB (ultra-fast broadband) build is scheduled for between June and December next year, and the council is keen not to dig up a new cycleway for the ducting, so it will probably tie in the cycleway works with Chorus"

The cynic in me says they are avoiding doing anything in 2019 because local government elections are in October 2019, and no southern ward councillor worth their salt wants to take responsibility for being anywhere near

a) an unpopular half a$$ed cycleway , or

b) having the road continually dug up for weeks at a time.....
