Greetings

 

Just change connection over to UFB and changed ISP to Voyager. I have my own mail server, Postfix/Dovecot, but am not sure on the correct fqdn for smtp to use for Voyager.

 

The help desk this morning wasn't helpful, and their support team aren't working in the weekend.

 

I am now using in my Postfix config - smtp.voyager.co.nz while previously used MP.MAIL.ISX.NET.NZ..

 

My logs are showing SASL authentication issues. "The current version shows SASL authentication failed; server smtp.voyager.co.nz[114.23.5.60] said: 535 Incorrect authentication data"  while MP.MAIL.ISX.NET.NZ showed another SASL error.

 

My sasl_passwd file shows syntax of [smtp.voyager.co.nz]:587  username@vygr.net:Password

 

I have tried the synatx above without @vygr.net witout any luck

 

Question is what should the correct FQDN for Voyager to allow me to relay emails through??

 

Has anyone else recently set their server up with similar issues??

More of a Voyager / SMTP than UFB issue.

 

@VygrNetworkMonkey may be able to shed some light though.

I assume you're attempting to configure Postfix to relay outgoing mail via Voager's SMTP server? I think the error indicates an issue with your user/password. It seems to connect fine to their mail sever from what I can make out so the hostname you've configured seems correct.

Does Voyager even offer SMTP to their residential customers? A quick search suggests they offer a paid hosted mail service including SMTP—but wasn't clear whether this is also provided to customers who only sign up for an internet connection (e.g. UFB). A lot of ISPs have stopped offering POP3/IMAP/SMTP in recent years...

Thanks for the updates. I'd be very surprised if that's the case as even TrustPower allowed me to do that. But then again I've been out of the know for a while....

Heya @astina6 (thanks for the ping @RunningMan)

 

Firstly, we DO offer residential support on the weekend - if someone advised different I sincerely apologise. (if you know who you talked to, flick me a PM and i'll ensure the Support managers know there's some inconsistencies)

 

Voyager doesn't offer email services with broadband connections.This is likely the confusion when calling the support team.
I know a lot of ISP's used to do so, it seems to be a dying service due to a number of factors with a number if ISP's now deprecating it .. but Voyager has never offered it.

 

While Voyager technically do have a SMTP server (smtp.voyager.co.nz) - it's more of a legacy product, filling a gap for older requirements - and is likely to be retired at some point.
It doesn't support authentication hence why you will be getting issues, but will support relay via Voyager IP's only on port 25.

 

All that said, I wouldn't recommend using it for the following reasons:
 * It's likely to be retired soon
 * It's a shared resource, so if someone gets a little under-zealous on their mail quality it's possible that it could be RBL'd - which logically would cause you delivery issues.

 

You've mentioned that you have used MP.MAIL.ISX.NET.NZ - this is for the paid mail services within 1stdomains.nz.
If you have an account with them, feel free to use it of course!

 

If you do not have an account with 1stdomains.nz (or any other paid email service) and still wish to use your server to send/receive email, then I would recommend letting your server deliver directly.
Voyager places no restrictions on this (ie: smtp blocking etc) - you are most welcome to do so.
Of course, all the usual recommendations that come with a mail server need to apply: relay protection, reverse DNS, whitelist with agencies (Trend Micro etc) - but as long as you tick all the boxes, you shouldn't have any issues.

Hi VygrNetworkMonkey: one quick question, smtp is now working, (thank you), however inbound is not. One comment around the place is the ISP has blocked the ports , ie port 25. Can you confirm this is not the case with Voyager? I''ve rattled my brain to get this sorted and this is one of the last possible reasons. All my DNS records including MX seem to be correct, so just wondering if this the case here? Also port 80,webservice is getting connections timed out??
