Well it has taken a month, but thanks to some help from @ChorusNZ I'm now live with Fibre.

We had to run some ducting along the roof of the garage as there was no sensible way into the roof space. The contractor we got this time did a great job and  we're very happy with the install.

Even managed to convince my Advanced Tomato router to connect on VLAN10 so I don't need to use the supplied modem.

Why can't you use the cat5e cable, like 2 pairs to send DC back to the other side of the ETP and just mount the ONT there? You get power and no wall changes?

Zeon:

Why can't you use the cat5e cable, like 2 pairs to send DC back to the other side of the ETP and just mount the ONT there? You get power and no wall changes?

Couple of reasons

  1. The land lord wanted the original copper to remain in place - we couldn't reuse the cable to the ONT
  2. ONT would have been just inside the garage door in a highly exposed area
  3. There is only one Cat5 to the ETP so I'd need to run a cable back to the cabinet.
  4. The house had a cabinet installed in the garage for a future fibre upgrade along with the patch panel for the rest of the house.

They've run the Hybrid cabled via the roof mounted duct to the rear wall and into the cabinet. The ONT is now mounted in the cabinet and overall everything looks tidy.
