Hi guys, I've finally have subscribed to Orcon's Hyperfibre 2000/2000 plan.

My concern is that Chorus configured the Hyperfibre OnT as just an ONT and not RGW. The only active port is the 10G port which they said it has to be connected to another modem.

I just need an advice how to go about my setup if I have these:

1. I have a network patch panel at the GF where the Hyperfibre is located l that can supply wired connection (cat 6 cables) to 1F and 2F
2. I got a 2.5G AX6600 router at the 1F

I was hoping if this will work and I need your advice:

A. Request Orcon or Chorus to switch to RGW mode, where the 10G will be connected to the 2.5G router at the 1F where I can convert the AX6600 to an access point? The 4 lan ports will then be tapped to the patch panel to supply <1G connectivity through Ethernet
B. Maintain the Hyperfibre ONT as it is (being just an ONT) then purchase a 2.5G 5-port switch which will be tapped to my patch panel to supply connectivity to the different floors + use 2.5G AX6600 as an access point?
C. If you have other recommendations, feel free.

Cheers

Hi its your ISP that configures the mode, not Chorus, albeit they do it via Chorus's API or provisioning site.

That router you have, how do you propose to use it for anything other than 1G, as it only has 1G ethernet ports, its true you can LAG them, but I dont believe that feature is available on the ONT/RGW to match it.

I think you need to purchase something a little more up market to gain any use above 1G than that thing.

I was under the impression Orcon didn't configure the hyperfibre ONT to bridge mode, and only supported/allowed it in RGW mode?

Is this not the case?

Edit: Just checked their offer summary. According to this they do allow it: https://help.orcon.net.nz/hc/en-us/article_attachments/900008921246/HYPERFIBRE_8_NAKED.pdf

Orcon has appeared to have contradicted themselves. They don't seem to have a offer summary for the 2Gig plan (here) so it is not explicitly stated, but they do mention on their "Design you own" page that they 'will send a modem if it is required'. This is wrong and must be a typo.

But their offer summary for the 4Gig plan explicitly states 'This ONT will also act as your modem, so you don't need to plug in any additional hardware.'

So no, they (Orcon), do not offer bridged mode.

This page seems to have other offer summaries that indicate otherwise, though: https://help.orcon.net.nz/hc/en-us/articles/900007068443

My link was updated 4 months ago, yours was updated 1 month ago.
I’d be taking the newest one as the most current, still be handy for them to date the summary document though.
There we go, you answered your own question - yes orcon now offer bridge mode :)

So should I just stay with my current ONT at bridge mode, is this the better option? They offer an AX6000 modem for a fee of $10/month

do you need it as just a router or do you need it to have access point functionality too?

Hi, as I have 3 floors to cover, I think having an AP will be a better solution for me. Between the Hyperdibre Ont and possibly a 5-port 10gb switch, is the switch just a plug and play with the ONT?

You wouldn't typically connect an ONT in bridge mode directly to a switch (not with your level of knowledge anyway), you would rather connect the ONT to WAN interface on a router, the router LAN side then connects to the switch.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Hey thanks and yeah I’m not too technical when it comes to this as i haven’t explored using a switch before, so thanks for clarifying. 😉 If I request the Hyperfibre ONT to RGW mode, is it okay to plug in the switch where the switch ports will be connected to the patch panel?

Do you have cabling for access points?

Why do you need more than Gigabit to the access points?

Couldnt you just run a dedicated cable from a Gigabit switch to each access point so each one has dedicated bandwidth? and connect the switch to the Router via a 10gig connection?

@maveric As per your last thread of asking for mesh solutions of which you abandoned I am honestly not sure with what you're wanting to achieve by switching to Hyperfibre without any knowledge on routers, switches or even how to cable things up. This isn't the thread to ask for advise, you've already done that and people gave you advise which you appeared to have ignored.

If you don't know all of this already then you do not need Hyperfibre. You've already made it clear that you're using WiFi and Hyperfibre will not improve that for you.

Please return back to your existing thread to provide more information if required. This isn't the thread to do it in. Seriously, I have no idea why you're wasting your money by signing up...

All good, point taken. I'm learning and I didn't ignore my previous post. With all the different insights, I learned a ton of information that allowed me to redesign my current home network setup and utilising the pre build patch panel network board in my house. Cheers 😙
