Would be interesting to know what the letter drop said exactly. Wonder if it's case of the letter simply saying fibre was being laid (which is true to be fair to Chorus) and people interpolating from it to assume it was UFB rather than another form of fibre (which again is fair enough assumption for layman to make given all the recent media attention on UFB and Chorus significant involvement with it). But then again easy enough for someone to bring up the wrong mail merge template by accident. It's disappointing yeah but by all accounts it was a long shot to expect UFB to be rolled out.

The letter was essentially the same one I received at my Auckland address a few years ago. It stated it was being rolled out and that once completed we could get it from our ISP.  Believe me, I read it very carefully and about 5 times when I got it.

;-)

I don't have it front me now as it is on Waiheke and I'm in Auckland.

Looking at the Chorus maps there isn't anything in there showing Chorus Fibre around your area.

Turning on the UFB2 Areas and Planned areas layers there isn't much there either as the only UFB2 Planned area is around where the existing Chorus fibre shown below.

I would question if it really is Fibre or if it was a new copper pit rather than something with fibre in it.

And if you have a look at the copper cabinet maps.

All the "EUBA" green dots down the bottom of the map to the right of the Koi Island test are served from the WH/G, and the above are served from WH/P which is the Pin at the very top of the map.

Typically anything that is a new build are put on the map at least 6+ months out as physical builds take forever to do.

Hey @spacedog, et al.

Apologies on the delayed response, this took longer than expected to unpick.

Our network planner has advised we are laying a new fibre cable between Beachlands and Waiheke exchanges to provide greater network security. Part of this work includes landing a cable at Woodside Bay and feeding it along Gordons road.

They've mentioned the additional network elements will allow customers to be provisioned to Fibre. However as the area is not covered by the UFB agreements, a Fibre install would be at the customers expense.

If this is something you would like to look into, please get in touch with your broadband provider and request an "NGA on application" order. ^Matt

Well, we finally got our NGA on application quote back.  To get access to that fibre that is approximately 7m from my building is $103,000

Hard to not find this both frustrating and utterly hopeless.  No 4G coverage at our site and only ADSL that runs at 5mbps/1mbps on a good day.  I'm sorry, but I'm pretty unimpressed @ChorusNZ and it was quite cruel that I was given a letter drop saying I would get it and now being told I am back to having no hope of ever getting anything close to a decent quality fixed phone or internet service.

Not a lawyer but...

Section 9 of the Fair Trading Act states clearly that "No person shall, in trade, engage in conduct that is misleading or deceptive or is likely to mislead or deceive."

This would apply to Chorus.  If they have said, via letter or staff/contractors (agents), that fibre was being laid & available soon, then to not do that would mean that they have done what Section 9 forbids, they have at the least have likely mislead or deceived you and your neighbours.

My suggestion and what I would do in this case is advise @ChorusNZ that I was going to be laying a complaint with the Commerce Commission as I consider that they have broken the Act, clear & plain.

You never know, Chorus may do the honourable thing & honour what they told everyone in your area.

Hope this helps

… still not a lawyer 😊

Seems an incredibly clear case that flyers were simply delivered to the wrong area. Like retailers who make mistakes with pricing, the FTA actually offers protection for them.

If a retailer incorrectly lists a product in error at some outrageous price (ie 20% of its real retail) they are not obliged to sell it to you for that price, not a good look but still they dont have to sell it to you.

It's not $103k to lay 7m of fibre....

It's the entire process of building not just the lead-in, but the outside plant elements, like splicing chambers, enclosures, civil works, and then the actual splicing of the fibre all the way through to the exchange building... And then the actual active equipment, and provisioning of it, in the exchange building.... oh and the fact it's out ON A DAM ISLAND!!

If a top grade internet connection is so vital to the business, perhaps there is a business case to simply pay the money... if it's vital I'm sure the economics stack up just fine.

Edit: Just to add, the Chorus standard labour is fairly ridiculous, but this type of job isn't one you send the normal "UFB installers" too, so probably justified in this instance.

I don’t envy your situation OP... on the one hand it sucks having no (or poor) internet access, but on the other hand if one chooses to live rurally (or on an island) is it reasonable to expect the same levels of service or cost as you might in a more urban location?

Be interesting to see what happened with the letterbox drop though... seems something is awry there. Though mistakes do happen - that seems a fairly egregious mistake for Chorus to have made!
