There is no such thing as a "line test" for UFB. All a RSP can look at is the provisioned speed of your connection and check this is provisioned at the correct speed.

@Mush1364 all your results are from your vocus connection to vocus servers in CHCH

given the varibility in ping i would suggest something is causing congestion on your home network.

there are a few previous threads about people getting poor speeds to vocus speedtest servers so maybe try testing to a spark or vodafone server near you and see what you see.

OK had a wee prob with the benchmarks, the link the app generates does not display the server when you past it back into the browser.. so i know the lowest ping server is my isp (Well to Chch anyway).

haha, how random.  Yeah I tried the share out of the speedtest app and the outcomes are all over the show - the originating ISP is correct, but the server tested against is a bit random from my limited trials.

Based on your other posts, I suspected you were on the vocus network... Have a look at my thread here, and also this post.  There's something going on within the Vocus network - I cant understand why speeds are slower within the network while they are ok testing from outside it.

Na the app adds the closest server which is over riding the pasted link... at 1am there was no congestion on my network i was the only one awake :)

Yep read those threads and we're on the same page i feel.

I'm trying to work in a semi logical way however i do not know how an I.T. help desk works with people like me complaining as i expect they get lots of calls..

My issues are lower than expected download speed, ping spikes up to 60ms above normal for up to a minute (my game has stats for this), netflix buffering. All the tests i've run indicate theres an issue somewhere, my samknows box also reflects this. I have late model computers with decent specs and now my router and cables are also new. All my problems started about when we moved house and went into lockdown for covid19 (Only a few days in it) so after running benchmarks and getting nearly full speed to Sydney i would rule out my hardware being an issue, rule out the ONT and fiber to the exchange so i guess that just leaves us with Orcon's setup of my connection or a routing issue from the exchange outwards in their network somewhere. The house i'm in now is closer to the same exchange than my last address so i assume it would not get worse.

I'm thinking of asking for a static ip which would mean they would have to tweak my connection slightly and see if that fixes it.

Just installed wireshark which was sorta interesting, when i benchmark the vocus servers i get a lot of clusters of "out-of-order" and "TCP Dup ACK" errors, but when benching other non-vocus servers there are very few errors.... the I.T. gurus here may be able to say if its a real concern or not??..

I think the order was Vocusgroup, Spark, Vodafone then 2Degrees to Chch Servers as that was the order in the app. The 5 (my isp) & 6th link are to Auckland Servers.

This last link is to a Sydney Server (Not my isp)

https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/d/8899363f-fa68-4518-ac99-743d0ab765f1

So looking at this last link i am able to get my advertised speed so am really puzzled now... Also spoke to my ISP today and they confirmed that they are getting full speed indications to the router even though the line tests state otherwise. I've been asked to run another wired test but using my desktop computer instead so have ordered a cable long enough (Comp is real heavy to move).

Also went to netflix web site and run their test as i had been experiencing buffering, result was 240Mbps. @KrazyKid I would be interested to see what you get to this site? :)

So things are sorta working, still better than 100mb connection :)

Cheers..

@Mush1364

All your results have defaulted to Vocus Chch... Just because the speed test defaults to a local server does not mean that is the best server to test with. I use Stuff Fibre Auckland for most of my speed tests.

Your results also show that you are using the browser speed test. You should be using the Windows speedtest app as another poster has suggested.

You can change the speedtest server by selecting 'change server' or the settings icon.

Here is a result from Hawkes Bay to Vocus Chch... The left image is with speedtest on Chrome browser and the right image is using the Windows speedtest app. These were taken about 2.40pm today and about a minute appart

This is interesting, hopefully the Orcon support find it useful!

Please post back and let me know if you do move over to a static IP (from my exp with the amount of reboots, the orcon IPs are pretty sticky anyway) and whether that does indeed improve things.

This is an issue from sharing the link via the windows speedtest app - same happens to me. For some reason the link doesn't show the actual results - see below of the link that the speedtest app spat out for the test.

Also, this old post by ChorusNZ was a good thing to stumble upon - all the more reason to think there's something fishy going on in the Vocus network.

I see you have posted that your capture links have changed. It may be better to use the speedtest link share:

Here is one of my captures to Vocus ChCh (from the browser speedtest)

You are quite correct... the share link from the Windows Speedtest app does not give the correct test image result. Never noticed that before. :-(

That post is largely irrelevant now due to changes made in the input services now comprising most fibre connections.

Hmmmmm.... that is what I have been doing. Windows speedtest app is not spitting out the correct info here....

From the result list I see the expected info....

The share I get shows the correct download speed but the upload speed and the server used is incorrect...

Might have a look and see if I can flush my previous results... I don't know where the results are stored.

Was mainly referring to

Put Speed test servers inside the ISP network
Instead of routing your traffic onto someone else’s network to perform a test, if your ISP hosted their own server, inside their own network, in your city then we would see the fairest Layer 3 representation of attainable speed – noting the limitations of measuring speed at Layer 3 discussed above.

Select your own ISPs speed test server
Check the default speed test server is the closest to you and that it is inside the same network you are connected to before doing the test.

@Jase2985 - the last 2 links both look like testing from a Spark connection to a vocus server to me?

Uninstalled the Ookla Speedtest App, deleted all traces for Ookla from my User.... App package folder... Ccleaned up Windows, Rebooted computer, reinstalled Ookla Speedtest from the MS Store...

I was just about to pat myself on the back.... still get a crook result link....

Running Win 10 Pro 2004 here.
